It’s time for another Streets Roundup again as we look at walls around the world. Preview: Eric Joyner – “First World Problems” @ Corey Helford Gallery

This Saturday night (August 10th), Eric Joyner (interviewed) will be opening a new solo show at Corey Helford Gallery. Bringing his robots into the city, where his other favorite subject (donuts) are in much abundance will make for excellent material for his special form of portraiture. Utilizing a meme, First World Problems, as the title, the new work will no doubt add an extra layer of meaning when robot society is involved. Preview: Alvaro Ilizarbe – “Surveying” @ Martha Otero Gallery

On August 10, Martha Otero Gallery will host and open Surveying, a solo exhibition of recent works by Alvaro Ilizarbe. Fresh off his large scale mural in Chicago for The Arts Initiative and with a keen interest in the earth’s landscape, the artist will present insightful new paintings on topographical tectonic plate-shaped panels and a site-specific installation that consists of amorphous sculptural wall structures that lead through a passageway of patterned wallpapers representing the elements in the earth’s stratum. Upcoming: “10 Years of Wooster Collective: 2003-2013”

Tomorrow night (August 7th) in New York at a popup space (525 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011) arranged by Jonathan LeVine Gallery, Marc and Sara Schiller will be curating a show to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of their website – Wooster Collective. Preview: Sean Mahan – “Invisible Threads” @ Thinkspace

Coming up this Saturday, August 10th, the Thinkspace Gallery will be opening a show from Sean Mahan in their project room. Entitled Invisible Threads, the new acrylic and graphite works on panel is typical of the Florida-based artist’s work projecting innocence and nostalgia. Tying things in thematically for this exhibition are a series of portraits of children and their sewing machines, which is alluded to in the title of the show. Check our more preview images below…

Streets: Phlegm (Poland)

British muralist and illustrator, Phlegm, recently spent a couple days in the Polish capital, Warsaw, working on a new mural for the Street Art Doping festival. Once again, he got assigned an interesting wall by the organizers, with several different sized windows and parts of the plaster missing. Instead of covering these up, the Sheffield-based artist fully used the surface with all its given elements and created this mural based on the map of the world. Releases: Tauba Auerbach – “STAB/GHOST”

For those of you who haven’t seen the beautiful handcrafted STAB/GHOST book by artist Tauba Auerbach, here is a closer look. Released through Three Star Books, the translucent limited edition comprises of “clear plastic pages, silkscreened with patterns, sewn with lanyards of plastic thread, and mounted on a specially designed light table.” Produced in an edition of 10, the piece which also functions as a light sculpture, is a testament to Auerbach’s well-known interest in color theory and complex geometries.
