Coming up on September 9th, the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane will be hosting Shared Space : KAWS, Karl Wirsun, Tomoo Gokita. The artists involved are obvious from the title, but the interesting arrangement will see 17 works from KAWS on display, but also seen will be pieces from his personal collection – 26 works by Karl Wirsum including drawings, paintings, and sculptures from 1968 to 2011, as well as 9 faceless portraits and one sculpture by Tomoo Gokita.
KAWS states – “I think of collecting like building a library I can access and reference 24/7. I collect firstly for personal daily enjoyment but I also collect to fully comprehend as well as support the world I work and live in. Ultimately for me, understanding art and artists leads you to other art and artists. It’s a never-ending conversation, and it’s exciting.”
For fans in New Orleans who can’t wait until September, it looks like KAWS’ Companion (Passing Through) sculpture has already be installed at the museum and will be on display for a year. He will also be on hand for an artist talk at 5:30 pm on the day of the opening.
