Another must-see show to add to your Basel Week Miami itinerary is Jose Parla’s site specific installation at the YoungArts Jewel Box (2100 Biscayne Boulevard). Entitled Roots, the commissioned paintings and sculpture are part of the Rolls-Royce art program and will see the Brooklyn-based Cuban-American artist’s return to the locale of his formative years in the 1980s and early 90s. Curated by Laurie Ann Farrell of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), the exhibition will travel to a museum there in 2017.

Parla further states – “My grandfather, pilot Agustin Parlá once said to my father – ‘son, find your place in history’ and my father said the same to me. And my old friend Don Busweiler once said – ‘without roots, the tree won’t grow.’  This has always stuck with me and remained present in the process of my work over the years.

It’s exciting to unveil a new body of work while returning to my hometown. Together with Rolls-Royce and SCAD I’ve created a spectacular installation for YoungArts’ iconic Jewel Box, a place where I’ve seen so many young artists soak in inspiration. It’s an honour to support the arts and future artists and it is a great privilege for me to create this work with such great serendipity under the global spotlight of Art Basel Miami Beach.”
