This Thursday, October 11th, The Hole in NYC will be opening a new show from Jonathan Chapline. Entitled Material Memory, the exhibition will highlight the Brooklyn-based artist’s melding of digital and traditional techniques to create pieces with a unique aesthetic. Each work typically begins with some simple line drawings which he then fleshes out on the computer into more complex compositions with shading and color gradients. He then takes this digital file and converts it to analogue by hand painting the images onto canvas. Chapline oftentimes further rounds out his exhibitions with sculptures created through 3D modeling programs of the household objects or nudes that are often found in his paintings.
