Last Thursday saw the opening of Thomas Campbell’s first solo exhibition with the Joshua Liner Gallery, entitled Ampersand. The show’s title is apt given Campbell’s wide range of practice: paintings & drawings & prints & quilts & gourds & bronzes… In addition, all of the works explode with colors & patterns & textures & characters & words. And although displaying such a diverse grouping of mediums and works together could have easily felt fragmented or visually overwhelming, Campbell is able to unite them all by imbuing each piece with an infectious playfulness and joy, which makes Ampersand an exciting and engaging show to experience.
