Showing: Aaron Johnson – “Gone Fishin'” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

On 20th of April, Aaron Johnson opened Gone Fishin’, his first solo with Joshua Liner Gallery. For this showcase, the Brooklyn-based artist prepared a whole new body of diverse work that includes his unorthodox approach to painting and creating art work in general. The idea of the exhibition is to take a different approach to the traditional image of Americana and leisure lifestyle that goes with it. From fishing and hunting, all the way to America’s favorite snacks, Johnson pulled the stereotypical imagery through his own recognizable […]

Recap: Josh Sperling & Sam Friedman – “From the Cradle to the Grave” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

In January, Joshua Liner Gallery hosted a great dual exhibition from New York artists Josh Sperling & Sam Friedman. Entitled From the Cradle to the Grave, this showcase put together two lifelong friends with roots spanning to their youthful days. Evoking influences of postwar masters Frank Stella and Ellsworth Kelly, both Friedman and Sperling’s works explore the impacts of visual perception and movement. As seen in their contrasting styles, both artists push the boundaries with bold color combinations, high contrast, and structure. For Sperling, we were intrigued by the structured canvases […]

Openings: Alfred Steiner – “Likelihood of Confusion” @ Joshua Liner

New York based artist Alfred Steiner recently opened a slammin’ exhibition at Joshua Liner Gallery. Entitled Likelihood of Confusion, this show encompassed several cornerstone techniques that the artist has been focusing on of late. The new body of work included his realistic watercolors in which he assembles iconic symbols using eye catching free associated images, oil painted shaped fiberboards, and the jaw dropping 3M based reflective artwork with the Louis Vuitton Don and his run in with the papparazi that we first previewed with a studio visit. Check […]

Studio Visits: Alfred Steiner – “Likelihood of Confusion” @ Joshua Liner

Set to open his first solo exhibition tomorrow with Joshua Liner Gallery, Alfred Steiner welcomed us into his laboratory in Chelsea. The American artist has long been on our radar with his amazingly realistic watercolors and creative approach to assembling iconic symbols & images based on the long standing Freudian technique of free association. On every piece he creates, the viewer will likely find something memorable and thought provoking. Entitled Likelihood of Confusion, this new body of work will not only include his signature watercolors, but also two oil fiberboards that […]

Openings: Thomas Campbell – “Ampersand” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last Thursday saw the opening of Thomas Campbell’s first solo exhibition with the Joshua Liner Gallery, entitled Ampersand. The show’s title is apt given Campbell’s wide range of practice:  paintings & drawings & prints & quilts & gourds & bronzes… In addition, all of the works explode with colors & patterns & textures & characters & words. And although displaying such a diverse grouping of mediums and works together could have easily felt fragmented or visually overwhelming, Campbell is able to unite them all by […]

Openings: Michael Kagan – “Thunder in the Distance” @ Joshua Liner

We recently had the pleasure of visiting the painting studios of Brooklyn based artist Michael Kagan as he was preparing for his show at Joshua Liner Gallery. As it turns out, the final product was even more pleasing than we would have hoped. Entitled Thunder in the Distance, this exhibition focused on space travel and its various key components which make this seemingly impossible task of existing (temporarily) in space possible. Using inspiring brush and paint techniques, Kagan brings to life a subject that is constantly in the […]

Studio Visits: Michael Kagan – “Thunder in the Distance” @ Joshua Liner

AM recently had the pleasure of visiting the Brooklyn studio of painter Michael Kagan as he prepares for his upcoming exhibition at Joshua Liner Gallery which opens April 3rd. Entitled Thunder in the Distance, this latest body of work continues his exploration of space aviation. Known for painting with oils, Kagan employs an impasto technique which utilizes thick and deliberate strokes. From upclose, the paintings seem to be almost coming apart, but take a few steps back and it appears to re-form tightly into a […]

Studio Visits: Wayne White

AM recently got the chance to visit Wayne White in his Los Angeles studio. His workspace is as amazing and surreal as you would imagine, including four foot tall eyes and an oversized mask of former president Lyndon Johnson. Although White is best known in the art world for his paintings that combine vintage imagery with clever, bright colored words, he is also recognizable as the star of the documentary Beauty is Embarrassing and for his work on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. When we arrived he was […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Miami Project

The Miami Project successfully launched its second rendition during Basel week with a well-curated selection of U.S. galleries, including such notable names as Yossi Milo, Joshua Liner, Mark Moore, Richard Heller and David B. Smith. Located in the Wynwood Arts District, the young art fair focused on primary representation of emerging and mid-career artists, which was a nice counterpoint to its much larger neighbor, Art Miami. Overall, Miami Project was well-attended, and both galleries and collectors seemed very enthusiastic about the showing. Below is a […]
