Openings: Cleon Peterson – “White Flag” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

AM attended the opening night for Cleon Peterson’s show White Flag at Joshua Liner Gallery a couple weeks ago. Being the first solo exhibition in New York, we were impressed by the sheer size and raw graphics displayed by Cleon. His color choices and figure composition seems to hold nothing back hitting the viewers right between the eyes with pure emotions. As mentioned in our preview, the gross violence and lawless nature of his subjects seem to convey giving in to one’s dark side, thus […]

Previews: Cleon Peterson – “White Flag” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Cleon Peterson is getting ready to unleash a new series of brutal works at Joshua Liner Gallery. The exhibition is entitled White Flag, which may mean surrender to you or I, but after checking out the graphic violence and gross depravity in these paintings, it may mean surrendering to the crazier side of human impulse. We stopped by the gallery to bring you a closer look at what you’ll be experiencing through his twisted landscapes. The show is officially on view already with a special […]

Previews: Tat Ito – “Memento Mori” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

New York-based Japanese artist Tat Ito makes his NYC solo debut with a show at the Joshua Liner Gallery entitled Memento Mori, the opening reception for which takes place 6-9pm this Thursday. The Latin phrase (literally “remember you will die”) often is used in reference to artwork representing death or the impermanent nature of life. However, from the look of the preview images we’ve seen, Ito seems to be using the term—along with certain visual allusions (like the lobster above) found within his new series […]

Preview: Oliver Vernon – “Sprung” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

In his second solo exhibition with Joshua Liner Gallery, Oliver Vernon will yet again seek to take art goers on a visceral journey with his unique artistic vision, where the laws of gravity don’t exist, and time and space are warped into a lucid whirlwind of color and movement. Opening this Thursday, April 14th, Sprung continues the signature psychedelic imagery exhibited during his first showing at the NYC gallery, Unexpected Occurrences (covered), yet this time draws upon a new bounty of inspiration provided by the […]

Video/Armory Week ’11 – David Ellis Wins Pulse New York 2011 Prize

Over the weekend, members of the Pulse Prize selection committee made the exciting announcement that this year’s Pulse Prize would be awarded to David Ellis. Ellis—represented by the Joshua Liner Gallery in the fair’s Impulse solo project section—exhibited a varied collection of sculpture, video and installation, including True Value (Paint Fukette), an animatronic assembly of paint buckets orchestrated to create a complex drum beat. Ellis will receive a $2,500 cash grant and the opportunity to design the bag provided to VIP guests at the 2012 […]

Openings: Ian Francis – “Fireland” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last night, Ian Francis (featured) unveiled his latest body of work Fireland at Joshua Liner Gallery. Exhibiting in his first New York solo, Mr. Francis again knocked it out of park, clearly dazzling the Armory week crowd that attended. Ian’s paintings demonstrated why many around the world draw inspiration from his creations. It was also exciting to see a number of varied mediums he choose to exhibit – ranging from canvas to charcoal to inks on paper. We also noted the further refinement of Ian’s already popular […]

Preview: Ian Francis – “Fireland” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Ramping up for his first solo exhibition in New York City, Ian Francis is set to unveil a new body of his haunting, yet exceedingly moving, work at the Joshua Liner Gallery next week. Opening Thursday, March 3rd, Fireland will see the British artist truly testing the bounds of his imagination and flexing his technical muscle to create a raw mixed-media blend of abstraction and figuration, a lucid marriage of dreamscapes lingering with nightmarish overtones. As evidenced from the work exhibited during Art Basel Week […]

Signings: Kris Kuksi – “Divination and Delusion” Book @ Joshua Liner

It’s always fun to run into our friend Kris Kuski as he was recently in New York to sign his latest book Divination and Delusion at Joshua Liner Gallery. Numerous fans were on hand to catch Mr. Kuksi in the flesh and he was more than happy to meet and greet each one. More pics and a giveaway for you after the jump.

Openings: Pema Rinzin – “Compassion Transformed” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last week saw the opening of Tibetan master painter Pema Rinzin’s first New York solo show Compassion Transformed at the Joshua Liner Gallery, and the sizable crowd in attendance couldn’t have been more impressed with what they saw. The entire gallery was filled with a varied yet consistent body of abstract paintings on canvas and paper, each exploding with vibrant colors and detailed patterns that must be experienced in person to be fully appreciated. Rinzin’s work comprised several groups of paintings: from the Peace and […]

Studio Visit/Preview – Pema Rinzin

We recently had the honor of visiting the studio of Pema Rinzin as he was preparing for his solo exhibition entitled Compassion Transformed, which opens January 27 at the Joshua Liner Gallery. Rinzin is a master of traditional Tibetan Thangka painting and also founder of the New York Tibetan Art Studio, where he passes on his knowledge and skill. However, he came onto AM’s radar last Spring, when a trio of his works on paper stood out from Joshua Liner’s Barnstormers show as some of […]
