This past Tuesday night, AM was on hand on the rooftop of Gawker Headquarters to cover the private preview party for the exciting collaboration exhibit “Mom & Popism“ (previewed), conceived and curated by Billi Kid. This unique project between Gawker Artists and authors/photographers, Jim & Karla Murray, served to enlarge some of the classic “mom and pop” storefronts seen in the Murray’s book, “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York.â€
These works, which culturally and ethnically defined many parts of NYC, were remixed with the help of a select group of graffiti and street artists onto eight wooden panels at the outdoor rooftop location, with three of these panels headed down this this year’s Art Basel Miami.
Continued after the jump…
Participating artists included Billi Kid, Crome, Shiro, Lady Pink, Cycle, Matt Siren, Blanco, Ticky, Cake, Cern, David Cooper, Zoltron, Celso, Buildmore, Robots Will Kill, Destroy and Rebuild, Enamel Kingdom, Goldenstash, Infinity, Kngee, Morgan Thomas, Peru Ana Ana Peru, Plasma Slugs, Royce Bannon, Shai R. Dahan, The Dude Company and Under Water Pirates.
The evening was packed full of media types from all over the country showing their love and support for everyone involved. It was a beautiful night up on the rooftop where the drinks flowed freely and the artists mingled with the crowd. Don’t forget to catch this show which opens to the public for one day only on August 15th from 12-4 PM or by appointment throughout August on the rooftop of Gawker Media at 210 Elizabeth Street.
