Our friends at the go-to Bay Area art resource, Fecal Face (coverage of their 10 year show here), were able to recently pick sculptor Jud Bergeron’s brain about his collaboration with Joe Sorren (featured) for the acclaimed painter’s first retrospective exhibit, slated to open at California State University Fullerton’s Grand Central Art Center (GCAC) in Santa Ana on Saturday, November 10th. In an effort to shed some light on the collection of unique sculptures produced exclusively for this milestone occasion, entitled “Interruption”, the insightful interview has provided some commentary on the origin of the project, along with the first public images of these wonderful one-off works of art. Seamlessly blending disparate materials and manifested in a wide range of sizes, these fantastical works serve as the perfect example of a collaborative effort gone horrible RIGHT. Too often collaborations are wrought with discordant elements, yet the synergies inherent in these sculptures seem to have coaxed the best out of both artists at the peak of their respective careers into a situation where ultimately the whole has become more compelling than the sum of the parts acting alone.
The retrospective, which will also include a new batch of Sorren’s masterful oil paintings along with definitive older works, then travels to Flagstaff, AZ for a showing in his high desert hometown. To further add weight to the exhibit, a book also entitled “Interruption” will be released at the opening. Keep your eyes peeled to AM for further coverage of what is shaping up to be a seminal event in the artist’s storied career.
