It was a star-studded affair last night in Southern California, as preeminent members of the ever-evolving New Contemporary movement, along with many collectors and casual observes alike, came out to the Grand Central Art Center to support Joe Sorren’s (featured) first comprehensive retrospective, Interruption (previewed). Chronicling the artist’s immense imagination and proficiency with a paintbrush, the exhibition unified his most well-known paintings from the past together with a impressive collection of new oil works. Displayed in tandem, and harkening back to Sorren’s earlier experiences transforming his characters into bronze figures, were a series of whimsical one-off sculptures produced in collaboration with Jud Bergeron (teased).

Experienced as a collective whole, the jaw-dropping body of work showcases Joe’s uncanny ability to illuminate a canvas like none other, with masterful brushstrokes, a keen awareness of color and light and resounding proof that imperfection in form is often more beautiful the latter. A truly magnificent sensory experience generously on view through the New Year, where it will then move to Flagstaff, AZ for an encore showing in the artist’s hometown. To coincide with this historic occasion, a comprehensive book, simply titled Joe Sorren: Paintings – Sculptures (2004 – 2010), is now available.
