January jump started 2010 with a flurry of art that kept us busy and entertained. To get you caught up, the staff at AM picked some of the freshest stories for another edition of Second Helpings. Get served after the jump.

Ernesto Yerena has a new project and this time, it’s of the Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Working with our friends at Modern Multiples (featured), Ernesto is set to release another dual editioned silk screened print on Hecho Con Ganas this Thursday (Feb 4th). Check out the print details and a video of Ernesto hand stenciling the piece after the jump.

Openings: Damien Hirst – “End of an Era” @ Gagosian Gallery (Madison Avenue)

This past Saturday night, AM had the chance to tag along with British contemporary icon Damien Hirst at his opening at the Gagosian Gallery (Madison Ave). As stated in our preview, the show titled “End of an Era” was exactly that – an end to a highly notable period of Damien’s infamously publicized career where he made headlines with awe-inspiring and highly controversial achievements in the art world. This show contained the last of many prime examples of the British Bad Boy’s most renowned and infamous works – important iconic achievements […]

Studio Visits/Preview: Tomokazu Matsuyama – “In Case You’re Lost” @ Frey Norris

Last month, we gave you a little teaser of Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama’s (interviewed) west coast solo at Frey Norris. Now, we bring you an exclusive studio visit & sneak peek into some of the mind boggling pieces that will grace the gallery walls come this Thursday, February 4th (6pm-8pm). As you can clearly see from the latest incarnation of his iconic “Runnin’ Deep” imagery, he’s going for the gusto. With bolder colors and even bolder compositions, this is one of the shows that we’re looking forward to […]

Preview: Andres Guerrero @ Subliminal Projects

San Francisco based artist Andres Guerrero is set to open a new show at Subliminal Projects on February 6th. His art has been a boon for him to equate the personal emotions of losing loved ones in his life. While at first his skulls may seem morbid, on second glance, it also contains the duality of life and its fragile yet wondrous nature. Andres and SP has hooked us up with a few exclusive preview images of what’s to come. Check it out after the jump.

Sketchbook: Ian Francis

Time for another peek inside a sketchbook. “Practice makes perfect” and if the old axiom is true then it may explain Ian Francis’ crazy skills with the brush. Ever the passionate artist, Ian is constantly honing his concepts and technique with sketches and studies. As AM observed in our recent studio visit (here), Ian’s studio was littered (certainly didn’t look like “litter”) with numerous sketches of his fantastic landscapes and hypnotic characters. Mostly utilizing just charcoal and graphite for what he refers to as “simple doodles,” Ian […]

Benefit: “Auction For Haiti” @ Brooklynite Gallery

With 100% of the proceeds going directly to the orphanage, it’s a definite win-win for all who participate in this very charitable event. More images after the jump.

It’s great to see more support from artists in our community as they rally support for the relief efforts in Haiti. The giclée print “Haitian Girl” measures 18″ x 24″ and is limited to an edition size of 50. All proceeds are being donated to Yéle Haiti. It is available immediately here, so go donate […]

The hottest twins in the art world landed in Milan for their much anticipated second show with Galleria Patricia Armocida entitled “Nos Braços de um Anjo” (In the Arms of an Angel), which opened last night. Os Gemeos premiered their latest body of work, consisting of beautiful canvas paintings, sculptures and of course their famed installations for the lucky folks of Italy. Check out the opening pics after the jump.

Openings: Saelee Oh – “Infinite Roots” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Saelee Oh capped off the trifecta opening alongside of Josh Keyes (covered) and Doze Green (covered) at JLG. The LA based artist filled the “gallery II” space with a multitude of mediums that cohesively brought together the theme “Infinite Roots.” Her upbeat works featuring female figures and animals floating in an organic environment interwoven with one another were fun to experience. Especially noteworthy were her hand cut paper images that expressed much via simple silhouette contrasts reminiscent of the renowned Kara Walker, another AM favorite. […]
