Baby Tattooville ’09: Travis Louie’s “Creature Parade”

Baby Tattooville‘s Secret Society was taken into Travis Louie‘s gorgeously illustrated Victorian and Edwardian world of human oddities and mythical beings with “strange grooming habits” for one weekend. What was even better was that lucky attendees this year were able to take home the experience with a original portrait by the man himself. Yes, not just a print, not just an ordinary multiple, but a unique, hand-drawn piece of art that you may have witnessed with your own eyes created in person. More after the […]

Art Review 2009 Power 100 List

The highly anticipated annual Art Review Power 100 list was just released on Thursday.  The list this year reflects the fundamental changes that the global financial crisis has unleashed onto the art world.   Almost a third of the entries are new to the list.  Previous top artists and collectors have had steep drops.  Steadily rising up the ranks are powerful and networked curators that have a huge influence on what gets seen and promoted. More, including full list, after the jump…

Baby Tattooville ’09: James Gurney’s Explorer’s Journal

Auctions: Sekoto Painting Sets Record for the South African Artist at Auction

There occasionally is some good news to come out of the down art market in this global recession.  On October 6, Sotheby’s hosted their Impressionist and Modern Art sale, which included Russian and Latin American Art.  Sotheby’s also snuck in this piece by South African artist Gerard Sekoto, a self-taught painter.  The 20×24″ oil on canvas (1945-1947) painting was estimated to sell between $100,000-150,000.  It smashed that estimate to hammer at $542,500 (inclusive of buyer’s premium). More after the jump…

Baby Tattooville ’09: Curious Art Sale

During each annual Baby Tattooville, artists produce exclusive artwork for an all-one-print that includes each and every piece.  The original artwork that is used for that print is available first to attendees of the event, then if any pieces are still available, the public will have a chance to buy.  The order in which those lucky BT-goers receive the opportunity to purchase is based on their ticket number (those who were the first to register get lower numbers).  It is a wonderful opportunity to skip […]

Baby Tattooville ’09: Curious Store

One of the favorite activities Baby Tattooville-goers look forward to the most during Baby Tattooville is shopping at the Curious Store.  Loads of exclusive goodies were available for purchase from the popular shop, including prints, toys, books, and originals from artists Audrey Kawasaki, Jeff Soto, Tim Biskup, Tara McPherson, Yoskay Yamamoto, and Luke Chueh.  If you have ever tried to purchase any limited edition items from any of these artists, you will know how much of a battle it usually is to try to be […]

After a successful exhibition last year (“Beyond Baby Tattooville”), the Riverside Art Museum brings back Baby Tattooville with this year’s roster of artists, with a show called “Son of Baby Tattooville”.  It was a unique museum group show in that almost all the artists who had works in the show made it in person to the opening.  Museum-goers were greeted with highly-representational pieces by each artists, such as Audrey Kawasaki‘s classic Two Sisters. More images after the jump…

As the legendary graffiti artist braced for the public to see the work that spans 20 years of his career, he grabbed his spray can and blessed the […]
