Recap: Art Basel Switzerland 2019

Last week, the art world once again congregated in Switzerland at the art fair that start it all – Art Basel. The picturesque Swiss town saw collectors, dealers, curators, and others gather to see the most exciting artworks from the top galleries in the world all displayed at the same venue. Previews: “The Visions of Graces” @ Roq La Rue

Tomorrow night (June 13th), Roq La Rue in Seattle will be opening a three person show from Kari-Lise Alexander (seen above), Syd Bee, and Laurie Lee Brom. Entitled The Visions Of Graces, the exhibition features paintings from three Northwest painters who imbue their feminine imagery with surreal and dark elements as well as an atmosphere of mystery. Upcoming: Jen Stark – “Dimensionality” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

On June 20, Jen Stark inaugural solo exhibition with the Joshua Liner Gallery will open in New York. Dimensionality features paintings, sculptures, installations, and a mural from the Los Angeles-based artist that highlight her mastery of seductive patterns and a vivid color gradients. As the title of her show suggests, she imbues her works with complex layers and rich textures, granting a sense of dimension to her pieces, of a prime example of which can be seen above. Streets: Super A – “Resonance” (Boston)

Last month, The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy in Boston invited another artist to paint a mural on the MassDOT building in Dewey Square Park. Super A follows in the footsteps of Mehdi Ghanyooloo (2o16) and Os Gemeos (2012) with a pair of Barn Swallows breaking out of a glass cloch that fit perfectly in the architectural confines of the structure. Showing: Greg “Craola” Simkins – “LET THE OUTSIDE IN” @ KP Projects

Currently at KP Projects in Los Angeles, another solo showing from Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) is on view until June 15th. Entitled LET THE OUTSIDE IN, the new body of work from the locally-based artist continues his world building and furthers the rich mythology behind his narrative. Along with some familiar characters, Simkins has introduced a few others like his hero the “Defender of the Outside” Kitron as well as the Starry Knights. Releases: Aron Wiesenfeld – “The Bridge” Print

Based on a haunting painting from Aron Wiesenfeld’s recently closed show in Pasadena (covered), his latest print features a girl on a snow covered bridge midway between two worlds. The Bridge is time limited release and is available here now until 7:59 AM PDT on Friday, June 7th, never to be produced again. Measuring 22″ tall × 34″ wide, the print comes signed and numbered and costs $190. Head over here if you want to add it to your collection. Discuss Aron Wiesenfeld here.

Over the weekend, Tai Kwun Contemporary opened an expansive new show from Takashi Murakami entitled MURAKAMI vs MURAKAMI. Taking over all the galleries at the art center, the over 60 paintings and sculptures on display represent different facets of the Japanese artist versatile practice.
