Recap: Cai Guo-Qiang – “The Ninth Wave” @ Power Station of Art (Part II)

After sharing photos of the high profile installation and an in depth look at the creation of new commissioned pieces for his new show in Shanghai, we now turn our attention to Cai Guo-Qiang’s explosive opening festivities at the Power Station of Art. With the return of our Streets: World Roundup feature, we first want to bring your attention to a new mural from Blu in Sardinia, Italy. The wall he painted once again showed his skills with large-scale imagery while working around architectural features of his surface. Previews: Heiko Müller – “Glades” @ Feinkunst Krüger

On September 6th, Feinkunst Krüger will be opening an exhibition from Heiko Müller, his first solo with the Hamburg gallery since he started showing with them in 2003. Glades will feature the German artist’s nature-infused paintings, a byproduct his inspiration for art always originating from his times spent in the mountains and forests. Of course, there is a surreal aspect to his work as well, sourced from the times where he experiences uncanny or eerie feelings in the outdoors – like jogging through the woods at dusk. […]

Upcoming: KAWS – “Clean Slate” Sculpture @ Harbour City (Hong Kong)

After sharing photos with you earlier this week from Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) current showcase at Harbour City in Hong Kong, we now have word of what comes next at the Tsim Sha Tsui hotspot. Starting on September 18th, KAWS will make a return appearance with an ambitious new sculpture in the Ocean Terminal forecourt, site where his previous massive Passing Through companion was situated in 2010 (covered). Previews: Yoskay Yamamoto – “rainy day with a chance of sun” @ Hellion Gallery

On October 2nd, the Hellion Gallery in Portland will be presenting new works from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) tentatively entitled rainy day with a chance of sun. Like his recent showing in Los Angeles (covered), the new whimsical body of work will consist of paintings, clusters of smaller works, and his hand-crafted wooden sculptures. Also included in his manga-esque imagery will be a series of “uninvited collaborations.” Discuss Yoskay Yamamoto here.

Streets: Swoon for Djerbahood (Tunisia)

Another artist who traveled to Tunisia for the Djerbahood Project (coverage here) was the Brooklyn-based Swoon (interviewed). She joined the long list of artists invited by Galerie Itinerrance to beautify the North African island. Working with her distinctive imagery and the village architecture, she certainly put up some compelling pieces for the locals to enjoy. After putting in her time on this project, she returned home to learn that she was nominated for the Smithsonian Biennial James Dicke Contemporary Artist Prize. Upcoming: “Unnatural Histories III” @ Antler Gallery

Opening on September 25th, Unnatural Histories III will be will be the third in a series (see 2013) of shows at Antler Gallery featuring portraits of mythical creatures. Along with the piece from Josh Keyes (seen above), works from Vanessa Foley, Michael Page, Craww, Syd Bee, Brin Levinson, Ryan Berkley, Ben Kehoe, Siolo Thompson, Susannah Kelly, Annie Owens, Niel M.
