Upcoming: Kelsey Brookes – “Sleep: The Science and the Mystery” @ Library Street Collective

On July 25th, Library Street Collective in Detroit will be hosting new works from Kelsey Brookes collectively entitled Sleep: The Science and the Mystery. Drawing on his past life as a biochemist, the San Diego based artist paints chemical and molecular structures with loosely defined abstract shapes and patterns. The resulting psychedelic swirls can put the viewer almost into a trance-like state if one stares at the work too long, mesmerized by the vortex of vibrant colors. Discuss this show here. Streets: Shepard Fairey For The Line Hotel (Los Angeles)

AM recently had the pleasure of staying at The Line Hotel in Los Angeles, a project put together by the good people behind the Ace Hotel among others. Currently at the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles, Japanese artist Kenichi Yokono has a show on view entitled The New Suburbs. The new collection of painted wood carvings are a continuation of what he presented with the same gallery back in 2011 (covered), and are fine examples of Yokono’s modern take on traditional woodcutting. The time had come for another Streets World Roundup here on AM. Leading things off is a complex new work of art from Felice Varini in Hasselt, Belgium for the “De Unie Hasselt-Genk” exhibition. The spiral-like piece which plays with perspective was painted on the roofs and facades of 99 buildings and can only be properly seen from one vantage point. Take a look at more here. JR – “Women Are Heroes” Container Ship

Over the weekend, JR (interviewed) launched a pretty special project from Port of Le Havre, France – a 365 meter long container ship, the CMA CGM MAGELLAN, pasted with his iconic eye motif. Working on over 151 containers, the French artist used them as pixels to recreate the eyes of Elizabeth, a Kenyan woman living in the Kibera slums, in Nairobi from his Women Are Heroes series of works.
