Recap: Ken Sortais – “Les Peregrinations De Si Atroce” @ Galerie Celal

Last month, Galerie Celal in Paris opened up a new show from Ken Sortais (aka Cony from PAL Crew) entitled Les Peregrinations De Si Atroce. The Frenchman who was once a pro golfer who in the end could not resist his love for graffiti put together a new body of works featuring paintings and sculptures that takes viewer on a symbolic journey. While looking at a further abstraction of his usual work, one can almost see hints of something emerge in the lines and patterns, yet can’t be […]

Recap: POW! WOW! Taiwan

Last week, the first POW! WOW! Taiwan wrapped up successfully as invited artists finished public works throughout the capital city of Taipei. With the main event based in Hawaii (see 2014), it looks like the crew behind this annual art retreat will be branching out to different parts of the world. Taipei’s version featured some familiar faces and some new talent, including some local artists. We have already shared photos of James Jean’s impressive wall and an associated show from Brendan Monroe & Evah Fan, […]

Upcoming: Futura – “Introspective” @ Magda Danysz (Paris)

On June 14th, a true New York City legend, Futura, will be opening a solo show at Magda Danysz Gallery at their location in Paris. Entitled Introspective, the new body of work will no doubt feature the pioneering artist’s post graffiti abstractions as well as forms of his signature atom sign and pointman character. So fans who are in France who may also have been recently following his commercial work (see NBA & World Cup), will not want to miss a rare chance to see his […]

Openings: “Space//Squared” @ White Walls Gallery

Last month, White Walls Gallery in San Francisco opened a group exhibition entitled Space//Squared. Curated by Sven Davis, the showing was a followup to an event last year in Portland (covered). This time around, participating artists were again asked to contribute artwork in a 10 x 10″ format.  Along with pieces from over 100 artists (list seen below), Adam Friedman and Robert Minervini also created a site-specific installation featuring a series of paintings interspersed throughout mural elements. Roster: 2501, Adam Friedman, Adam Weir, Akiko Masker, Alex Lukas, Alicia Dubnyckyj, […]

Upcoming: Brandi Milne – “Here Inside My Broken Heart” @ Corey Helford Gallery (Popup)

On June 14th at a special popup location (10000 Culver Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232), Corey Helford Gallery will be presenting a new body of work from Brandi Milne. The new paintings have been in the works for almost 2 years with each piece drawing from difficult personal experiences from the Los Angeles area-based artist. Collectively entitled Here Inside My Broken Heart, the work features a somber palette for her characters as they contemplate new situations. Discuss Brandi Milne here.

Previews: Zaria Forman – “Ice to Island” @ WWFA (Seattle)

Tonight in Seattle, Winston Wächter Fine Art will be opening a solo show from Zaria Forman, who we featured in an Art Focus article earlier this year. The exhibition holds special meaning for the Brooklyn-based artist, as her exquisite paintings will be shown alongside the photographs of her late mother, Rena Bass Forman. The two of them traveled together to see the natural wonders of the world in places like Greenland, Iceland, Patagonia and India, inspiring Zaria’s own interest in documenting disappearing places. Ice to Island features some of the […]

Previews: Chrystal Chan @ CoproGallery

This Saturday (June 14th), CoproGallery in Los Angeles will be presenting multiple mini-solo shows, one of which is from Chrystal Chan. The series of mostly new paintings from the San Francisco-based artist feature oftentimes metaphorical and spiritual-based imagery centered around her human and animal characters. Take a look at more preview images below…

Previews: Thomas Campbell – “Ampersand” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Next Thursday (June 12th), Joshua Liner Gallery in New York will be opening a show from Thomas Campbell, his first with the gallery. Featuring painting, sculpture, original bronzes, and hand sewn works, Ampersand will let the California-based artist further explore the use of the gourd and its symbolism throughout his visual language. He states: “I feel there is a natural correlation between what I do and what I draw, [my drawings have] similar lines to the structure of gourds. I have been really drawn to them […]

Openings: Scott Hove – “Master of Rapacity” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Last weekend, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco opened a new show from Scott Hove entitled Master of Rapacity. Featuring his signature faux cake sculptural works, the exhibition was thematically based on what one would see in the house of a corporate bigwig’s house. Hove states: “America is currently undergoing a very decisive and quiet transition to corporate oligarchy, the government becoming more and more acquiescent to corporate policy. Corporate policy is by nature rapacious, and could not give a fuck about nature or your feelings. […]

Showing: Aurel Schmidt & Pierre Molinier @ M+B Gallery

Last week, AM stopped by M+B Gallery in Beverly Hills to check out the current show featuring work from Aurel Schmidt and the late Pierre Molinier. The unexpected pairing actually worked out quite nicely thematically combining Schmidt’s exquisite, twisted, and creative drawings of human anatomy with the French artist’s erotic photomontages. Head over before it closes on June 21st to see it yourself if you are in the Los Angeles area – it will be worth your time. Some installation shots via the gallery. Discuss Aurel Schmidt here.
