Releases: David Choe – “Dragon Girl” Print

Today at 3:00 PM PST, David Choe (featured) will be releasing a new print entitled Dragon Girl, with 100% of all proceeds donated to help the Typhoon Haiyan Relief in the Philippines. Measuring 3 feet by 3 feet, the edition of 38 costing $1200 has a little hand-painted watercolor on each one. Previews: Lazarides Rathbone @ Art 14 (London)

Art14 London is set to open later this week and Lazarides Rathbone will be on hand to show their stable of artists in the second edition of the art fair. Included will be brand new works from Conor Harrington (with the exquisite piece seen above), Todd James, Miaz Brothers, Brett Amory, and JR. Upcoming: Andrew Hem – “Dream But Don’t Sleep” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

After seeing the sweet wave breakdancer that Andrew Hem (interviewed) painted for a show (covered) during POW! WOW! Hawaii, we are really looking forward to his exhibition opening next month at Merry Karnowsky Gallery. Entitled Dream But Don’t Sleep, the exhibition will feature the Los Angeles based artist’s dream-like paintings, always inspired by his Asian heritage as well as his travels and personal experiences. Showing: Yayoi Kusama – “A Dream I Dreamed” @ MoCA (Shanghai)

At the end of last year, we had a chance to see for ourselves the genius of Yayoi Kusama while she was showing in New York (here & here). At about the same time, the Japanese artist also opened a show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai entitled A Dream I Dreamed featuring a diverse selection of large-scale installations, sculptures, and paintings. Releases: Mark Ryden – “Awakening The Moon” Print

This Wednesday, February 26th, at 8:00 AM PST, Mark Ryden will be releasing another print through Porterhouse. Entitled Awakening the Moon, the edition will be limited to 500, be sized at 38″ x 25.5″, and cost $500. Each one will be signed and numbered and be a nice addition to your collection. Upcoming: Fuco Ueda – “Kioku No Hana (Flower Of Memory)” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Expanding on and showing a series last seen during a show in Tokyo last year, the luminous works of Fuco Ueda will be making a rare appearance in the Los Angeles area. On March 29th, the Thinkspace Gallery will be hosting Kioku No Hana or Flower Of Memory from the Japanese painter featuring her young girls positioned in a bizarre world filled with bold electric colors, flora, and fauna – dominated by flowers in this instance. Last month, AM paid a visit to the Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea to enjoy new works from Tomoo Gokita. Working exclusively in shades of black and white for this exhibition, the Japanese painter has created a series of textured portraits that pay homage to the “dated archetypes lifted of pulp fiction, Hollywood rags, and film noir” with names like Showgirl, Geisha Girl, A Bathing Beauty, Cocktail Pianist from Acapulco, Daughter of a Fraudster, and A Female Spy. Openings: Joao Ruas – “VERSO” @ Thinkspace

Showing through this weekend at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City is VERSO, a new solo show from Joao Ruas. The Brazilian artist presented a diverse set of works including his largest work to date (seen above), a wall mural & installation, etchings, polaroids, backlit pieces, and more utilizing mediums such as acrylic, watercolor, pen, pencil, and gouache.
