Basel Week Miami ’18 / Previews: Vhils – “Ethereal” @ GGA Gallery

Tomorrow (November 30th) is the public opening of Ethereal at Goldman Global Arts in Miami, Vhils’ (interviewed) latest solo show. Timed perfectly to coincide with this year’s Basel Week Miami, the debut solo exhibition for the gallery inside The Wynwood Walls will highlight the Portuguese artist’s unique mark-making as well as his skills with multiple techniques and mediums. Releases: Daniel Arsham – “Hollow Figure” Sculptural Edition

Next Monday (December 3rd) at 12 Noon EST, Daniel Arsham will be releasing a new sculptural edition. Entitled Hollow Figure, the intriguing new collectible is based on his Architectural Anomalies, and will be a smaller scaled version of larger works that he has created from that series (and example of which can be seen below). While in Paris, you may want to pay more attention while riding the public transport as JR (interviewed) has installed his work in 11 metro and RER stations. Releases: Josh Keyes – “Landfall” Print

Josh Keyes (interviewed) recently released a new print through Thinkspace entitled Landfall based a painting from his show at the gallery (covered). Featuring an image of a bull running from the ocean with a burning ship in the distance, the piece is typical of the Portland-based artist’s penchant for juxtaposing the natural world against the folly of man. Sized at 18×26 inches and produced in an edition of 175, the print can be purchased here for $200. Discuss Josh Keyes here.

Currently at David Zwirner’s uptown location in New York (34 East 69th Street), Lisa Yuskavage has a solo show on view featuring a series of eight new works. Showing in association with a survey of small-scale paintings from the American artist in the gallery’s Chelsea location, New Paintings features portraits of mostly couples rendered in her hedonistic style and with her characteristic emotive use of color. The townhouse space was a great venue choice as it is the perfect setting for the domestic and intimate scenes that populate Yuskavage’s new pieces. […]

Following in the footsteps of artists like KAWS, Takashi Murakami, Jeff Koons, and Tim Burton, FriendsWithYou will have the honor of contributing a balloon in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. The duo’s signature Little Cloud will be making its biggest appearance yet, as a 30-foot-wide balloon in the famed NYC parade. Symbolizing light and hope, their character will also herald the opening of two shows this month from the locally-based artists – bronze sculptures at The Hole & colorful 3-D plasteline paintings at Arsham/Fieg Gallery. Videos: Can Guo-Qiang – “City of Flowers in the Sky” (Florence)

Over the weekend, Cai Guo-Qiang launched one of his signature firework performances in the skies above Florence. Entitled City of Flowers in the Sky, the explosive event was inspired by Botticelli’s masterpiece Primavera and heralds the opening of a massive solo exhibition presented by Uffizi Galleries and covering ten interlinked galleries. The solo exhibition from the Chinese artist is entitled Flora Commedia and features sixty of his famous gunpowder paintings in addition to sketches that document the creative process.
