Brett Amory – “Twenty-Four in New York” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Last month, AM attended the opening of Brett Amory’s (featured) new solo show entitled Twenty-Four in New York. For his second showing at Jonathan LeVine Gallery (alongside POSE & REVOK), the SF-based artist continued his series of works documenting various locations in selected cities, all in one hour increments. Rounding out the paintings, were the display of found objects at the spots he featured as well as a site-specific installation which incorporated a magazine stand with structural components. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Brett Amory here.

Upcoming: “Summer Reading” @ The Hole

Opening tonight at The Hole in New York is a new group show entitled Summer Reading. For this exhibition, the showspace was converted into a giant art book reading room where attendees will be invited to take a seat and peruse whatever may interest them. Of course, there will be art as well from a diverse list of artists on the theme at hand including Airan Kang, Alexander Rodriguez, Andre Saraiva, Andrew Kuo, Brad Phillips, Brian Belott, Brian Dettmer, Clare Rojas, David Shrigley, Devin Troy Strother, […]

Streets: Pøbel (Denmark)

To round up our coverage of the Public Art event over in Horsens, Denmark (co-curated by our contributing photographer Henrik Haven), we bring you photos of the work of Pøbel. If you remember, he himself also organized a street art festival (Komafest) last year in Norway. For his part (also see what Brad Downey, Sam3, and Escif did), Pøbel painted a couple murals as well as played with the idea of “mute” pieces which made a lot of noise but in photos disseminated online would make no noise. Previews: Naoto Hattori – “REM” @ Copro Gallery

It’s been a little over a year since Naoto Hattori last showed in Los Angeles (covered), so it is about time for another go. REM will open on July 27th at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica, with the title seemingly referring to that stage of sleep where dreams occur. This is certainly as good a title as any to describe the Japanese painter’s imagery, with surreal and psychedelic creatures, all rendered in super detail. If you have seen his work in person, you will have marveled at […]

Update: Kelsey Brookes

It turns out a piece from the amazing sold out show (covered) from Kelsey Brookes at Quint Contemporary last year went to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (seen above in their recent acquisitions show). If you remember, the piece entitled Mescaline was part of his series of paintings inspired by the structures of psychedelics, no doubt drawing from personal experience as well as from his viewpoint as a former biochemist. It sounds like he’s reached the end of the “party drug” works (some seen in progress below), […]

Herbert Baglione – “1000 Shadows” Project (Italy)

It looks like Herbert Baglione has been having some fun in Parma, Italy recently. Hanging out in an abandoned psychiatric hospital, the renowned Brazilian street artist took advantage of the location to continue his 1000 Shadows project, a series of works where he paints floating silhouettes on floors and walls. In this setting, one can imagine the poor souls that used to live in this place. More photos below… Discuss Herbert Baglione here.

Update: Saber

After his big exhibition in New York (covered), all has been quiet from SABER (interviewed) as of late – until several days ago. He shared some work that we have never seen exploring some new mediums for his American flag remixes like wood (Desert Flags) and encaustic. You can see some of his work next at an event put on by Inner City Arts, but also follow him on Instagram to keep up to date on his work. Discuss Saber here.

Openings: Momo in Grottaglie, Italy

Last weekeend in Grottaglie, Italy in the ceramic district, the geometrically inclined Momo opened up a solo show. Put on by the people behind the annual Fame Festival, the exhibition featured pieces that were very similar to the abstract murals that the street muralist has been known for. His use of color and the balanced composition bely a fine hand behind each work. Take a look at more photos below and reach out if you are interested in adding something to your collection here… Discuss Momo here. Photo credit: Matteo […]

Ryan McGinley – “Varuo” in Times Square

Times Square has been the stage for various projects form artists we have covered on AM in the past, not the least of these from Tracey Emin and JR. Now the high profile location has been playing nightly the Ryan McGinley video Varuo that we shared with earlier this year. The video is part of July’s Midnight Moment, the synchronized program on over fifteen of the largest digital signs in Times Square and will play through the rest of the month from 11:57 p.m. – midnight. Photo […]

Barry McGee x Jim Goldberg for VICE

In this year’s VICE photo issue (recently released), an interesting collaboration between Barry McGee and photographer Jim Goldberg was featured. The series of works entitled Interfearance features some of McGee’s patterned motifs that he is famous for, juxtaposed with Goldberg’s shots. Take a look at the other joint artist-photographer creations here, and enjoy more of McGee x Goldberg’s pieces below. And, if you are interested in checking out the work in person, VICE will be putting on the collaborations show at the Superchief Gallery in New […]
