Streets: Miss Van (Brazil)

Street femme fatale and intrepid traveller Miss Van has been spotted in frolicking in Brazil, in particular getting up in Sao Paulo. While visiting friends like Zezao and Ciro Schu, she took time to paint one of her signature Poupee characters near an abandoned factory – one of her first outdoor pieces for 2013. Preview: Victor Castillo – “Under Heavy Measures” @ Merry Karnowsky

This Saturday night (February 2nd) the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles will be home to a new solo show from Victor Castillo. Under Heavy Measures will consist of paintings on paper & canvas, sculptures, and sketches from the locally-based artist all created in the deceptively innocent style of illustrations for children’s stories. The title refers to his feeling that “the scales of power have become oppressive: inequality grows, the protests increase globally, and the brutality with which these demonstrations are repressed is also amplified” […]

Mark Ryden Studio Look

Here is a glimpse for those Mark Ryden fans out there who are interested in checking out the LA-based artist’s studio (and not to mention a painting in progress). Although the recent months have seen limited edition offerings (here & here), collectors of the low brow luminary’s work have been wondering when his next solo will be (with the last one in 2010). No dates yet but it sounds like his next exhibition will be in LA this summer, probably the postponed showing at Michael […]

Upcoming: Conor Harrington – “A Whole Lot of Trouble for a Little Bit of Win” @ The Outsiders (London)

On February 1st, Conor Harrington (interviewed) will be returning to London for another showing, this time at The Outsiders. A Whole Lot of Trouble for a Little Bit of Win will feature some of the studies that he has been sharing photos of with his fans for quite some time now, in particular the ones he did leading up to a painting of the same name for a showing in 2012. The UK-based artist calls these his Morning Glories as he paints them daily, first thing upon arrival at his […]

Studio Visit / Auction: RETNA

Over the weekend, AM was invited to a special event presented by New Image Art & Robert Galstian at RETNA’s (featured) studio timed nicely to coincide with the Art Los Angeles Contemporary. Along with a look at his spacious work space and refreshments, guests were also allowed to participate in an auction of available works to benefit Inner-City Arts. After having paid a visit to the urban calligrapher back in 2010, it was nice to see an update of his work space. Take a look […]
