Streets: Elbow-Toe – “Tastes Like Chicken” (New York)

It’s been a while since we caught up with Brian Adam Douglas, a.k.a. Elbow-Toe (interviewed) – the last time probably being in 2011 when we watcheuphill work on the streets as well as open a solo at Black Rat Projects (covered). The Brooklyn-based artist recently surfaced to paste up this new piece entitled Tastes Like Chicken in his borough. The style mimics the time-intensive collage technique he uses for his cut-paper works some of which you can see in March at the Andrew Edlin Booth at The Armory Show in NYC […]

Openings: Andrew Schoultz – “Fall Out” @ Mark Moore Gallery

Just this Saturday night, the Mark Moore Gallery in Culver City hosted the newest solo show from Andrew Schoultz entitled Fall Out. As we have come to expect form the San Francisco-based painter, the showspace was transformed with a series of installations. Taking it a step further, these sculptural elements seem to interact closely with the Mission School stalwart’s imagery – like the cannon seemingly spewing gold onto his recent riffs on the American flag. Also present were some some familiar motifs including brick walls, kinetic patterns, illuminati […]

Openings: “I’ll Love You ‘Til The End of the World” @ Roq La Rue

The I’ll Love You ‘Til The End of the World group show opened at Roq La Rue this past Friday to a large crowd which simultaneously got to see some great art and escaped the freezing temperatures outside. The title of the show is based upon a Nick Cave song of the same name, which finds the protagonist just after a bomb blast rocks a hotel as he speeds away, thanking his girl continually in the chorus. While some of the artists rendered the lyrics in […]

Streets: James “DALEK” Marshall (Corona Del Mar)

Continuing to produce public displays of his geometric mastery, James Marshall aka Dalek (interviewed) recently painted another mural at the Hobie Surf Shop in Corona Del Mar. Orange County is kind of ground zero for fans of the American artist’s work because of his affiliation with Hurley – leading to many shows, product lines, and associated events in and around Hurley Space. Check out some more shots below… Photo credit: James Ng for Arrested Motion. Discuss DALEK here.

Upcoming: “Conjoined III” @ Copro Gallery

Next Saturday night (January 19th), the third and final chapter of the Conjoined series of group exhibitions (see 2011 & 2012) will open its doors at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica. Curated by Chet Zar, the show features three-dimensional creations from some of the most imaginative artists out there like Colin Christian, Dave Pressler, Doktor A (above), Travis Louie, and Kevin Kirkpatrick, who crafted last year’s showstoppers – the Beavis and Butt-Head sculptures. The night will also see a mini-exhibition and book release from […]

Upcoming: Nate Frizzell – “Spectrum” @ LeBasse Projects (Culver City)

Tomorrow night (January 12th), the LeBasse Projects in Culver City will be presenting all new works from Nate Frizzell (interviewed). Spectrum will be his first solo showing of oil paintings since 2011 (covered) and as the title suggests, each painting will be focusing on a single color from his palette – in turn making up the full color range. Along with the originals, a special limited edition box set (seen below) of each of the eight paintings in the exhibition will be released. There will only be 50 boxes produced – […]

Preview: Jay Howell – “Enthusiastic Person” @ FFDG (SF)

On February 1st, Jay Howell will be presenting all new works at the Fecal Face Dot Gallery (FFDG), his third solo with the SF showspace. Entitled Enthusiastic Person, the 25 mixed media cartoon-styled works on paper will featuring renderings of the case of characters from his new animated children’s show Sanjay and Craig set to premiere sometime this year on Nickelodeon. If you didnt’ know, the talented LA-based artist is also behind the design of the main characters on Fox’s hit show, Bob’s Burgers. Discuss this show here.

Upcoming: Mark Dean Veca – “Made For You And Me” @ Cristin Tierney

Later this month, Mark Dean Veca (featured) will be opening his big solo in New York at the Cristin Tierney Gallery. The LA-based artist has been concentrating on side projects as of late such as his installation for the Space//Form show and a wall mural at the San Jose Museum of Art, so it will be nice to see a new comprehensive body of work from him. Expect more interpretations of pop culture with his modernized “Toile de Jouy” techniques like in the teaser image above. The […]

Streets: Phlegm (London)

It seems the Sheffiled-based Phlegm has headed south again to London for another mural. This newest piece is on the Village Underground wall on Holywell Lane and features some of the long legged creatures he has been painting as of late (see here), as well as one of his classic characters catching a ride. He has also been hard at work on a book that hopefully will be released soon. See some updates here, here, here, and here. Photo credit: Claudelondon. Discuss Phlegm here.

Upcoming: Dan Witz – “Prisoners 2012 – 2013” @ Lazarides (Rathbone)

On January 25th, Dan Witz will be making his solo debut with Lazarides at their Rathbone gallery in London. The multi-talented painter and street artist will be sharing paintings from his Prisoner and Mosh Pit series as well as plans to paint one of his prisoner’s images onto London phone boxes. Fans of the NY-based artist will be familiar with his renderings of the frenetic and crowded environment in mosh pits (most recently seen at a New York showing in 2011), but the Prisoner series might be less familiar. Witz partnered […]
