Releases: Woodstock (KAWS Version)

For those who missed out on getting the newest KAWS figure in person as part of your Christmas shopping (which is most of you as this release was in Japan), tomorrow will be your second chance. His version of Woodstock with his now characteristic double x’s will be available on Kawsone at Noon Eastern for those quick enough to snap it up. Discuss KAWS here.

Releases: Josh Keyes – “Lifted II” Print

The Portland-based Josh Keyes (interviewed) recently shared a tantalizing new photo of his next print release. You may recognize the painting as Lifted II from his recent showing (covered) at the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle – a wise choice as that was one of the strongest images from the show and certainly a favorite of many we talked to. No complete details yet but it sounds like the edition size is 150 with the size 24″ x 19.5.” Make sure you sign up on the mailing list […]

Releases: James Jean – “Parallel Lives” Catalog

For those of you who weren’t able to make it to the James Jean’s (interviewed) show opening tonight at the Tilton Gallery in New York, you have another way to get a look at the work. Pressure Printing has just released the catalog documenting Parallel Lives in an edition of 1000 that’s signed and numbered. There’s 56 glorious pages reproducing every drawing, painting and mixed media work in the show (which we gave you a glimpse of in our studio visit). Purchase it here now for only $38 if you are […]

Sketchbook: RIME

For those of you who have been following the street murals from RIME (aka Jersey Joe), you will have seen some of the luscious caricatured females that make it into his imagery (i.e.: here and here). As you would expect, many of these characters make it onto the pages of his sketchbook before going up on the walls – a glimpse of which we can see posted to his instagram account in recent days. Discuss RIME here.

Upcoming: Joe Sorren – “The Great Cantaloupe Day” @ AFA (New York)

Right on the heels of his showing (covered) at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery, comes another show in his adopted city from gifted painter Joe Sorren (featured). The Great Cantaloupe Day, set to open on February 24th at AFA in New York City, will feature a collection of new paintings and sculpture as well as some new limited edition offerings. Fans in NY of Sorren’s evocative work and deft touch with lighting will be happy with this double dose of art, but for those not in town, we’ll be bringing […]

Maurizio Cattelan – “AMEN” @ Centre for Contemporary Art (Warsaw)

The always provocative contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan is once again stirring up controversy, this time in relation to his current showing at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw. In addition to sculptural works for the museum, he has also placed a statue of Adolf Hitler praying on his knees in a former Jewish Ghetto where many Jews were killed or sent to their deaths by Hitler’s regime during the holocaust. If you remember, this piece was seen in the the stunning suspended retrospective at the New York Guggenheim […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Paul Kasmin Gallery @ Art Basel

Another booth we enjoyed at the main fair this year during Basel Week Miami was the work on display from Paul Kasmin Gallery featuring an eclectic mix of artists like Ivan Navarro (above), Kenny Scharf, Walton Ford, David LaChapelle, Erik Parker, and more. In particular, we enjoyed the special section from Navarro which included a set of optical illusion-based works from the Impenetrable series (made from fluorescent lights, resin, mirror) that mesmerized viewers as they peered down into the “depths.” Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Update: Barry McGee

After recently seeing some of Barry McGee’s work during Basel Week Miami (here & here), it reminded us to get an update together on some things that we have come across recently from Mr. Twist. First up are a couple of recently released insightful videos that we enjoyed watching – one regarding his epic mural at Brooklyn’s Mark Morris Dance Group building (covered here & here) and the other regarding a commission he created for the Oakland Museum of California. Even more exciting is word of McGee’s next museum showing scheduled […]

Upcoming: Robert Lazzarini – (damage) @ Marlborough Gallery (Chelsea)

This Thursday (January 10th), the Marlborough Gallery in Chelsea will be hosting the opening of Robert Lazzarini newest solo – (damage). The New York-based sculptor is known for his mind-bending works that take everyday objects and distorts them, leading the viewer to try to wrap their brain and eyes around the creation – oftentimes failing. For this exhibition, it sounds like Lazzarini will be twisting a window (above), safe, chain-linked fence, liquor sign, padlock, and motel door to disorient the audience, evoking an unsettling reaction.

Ryan McGinley Photographs Daria Werbowy for W Magazine

Photographer Ryan McGinley, whose video Varuo will make it into NYC taxis starting this week, continues to be linked with fashion shoots featuring supermodels – this time with Daria Werbowy. The latest set of pics for a feature entitled Earth Angel were taken for W Magazine, whom the NY-based photog famously worked with Kate Moss for back in 2007. Others McGinley has shot in the past includes the likes of Sienna Miller and Karlie Kloss, but we are sure there will be more in the future as his […]
