Merry Christmas from Escif

One of the most prolific street artists out there, Escif, apparently hasn’t taken Christmas off. He’s been on a roll as of late with increasingly more edgy and political imagery (for example here & here), not surprising as the depressing situation in Spain is fertile ground for inspiration. This recent wall in Valencia features his take on the Christmas tree. Discuss Escif here.

Basel Week Miami ’12: Holton Rower Performance @ Fresh Basel

While bringing you a look at the Fresh Basel exhibition (curated by The Hole / Kathy Grayson) held at the the historic 1920’s waterfront Villa Vecchia estate during Basel Week Miami, we mentioned that there would be special live performances held throughout the showing. Openings: Sarah Joncas – “Taking Over” @ Last Rites Gallery

Earlier this month, the Last Rites Gallery in New York hosted the opening reception welcoming all new works from Sarah Joncas (interviewed). Entitled Taking Over, the new paintings see her semi-autobiographical portraits embrace a darker side with dangerous creatures, eerie transformations, and morbid scenes added to her imagery, which is not surprising seeing the setting (and their penchant for the dark arts) in which they are being displayed. Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: Kenny Scharf

One of the sad stories present in every street art fan’s mind while attending Basel Week Miami this year was the passing of Tony Goldman. Instrumental in revitalizing the Wynwood area with his support of murals and public art, there were multiple tributes to the man during this year’s event. Kenny Scharf, a perennial visitor to Miami, also painted a wall in remembrance of Goldman at the Tony Goldman Memorial Garden. Check out more photos below… Photo credit: Birdman. Videos: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Black Christmas Tree” @ The Smithsonian

Just in time for Christmas, Cai Guo-Qiang has brought his pyrotechnics skills back to America (see Los Angeles earlier this year). Commissioned by the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian in Washington DC, the renowned Chinese contemporary artist executed three separate explosions in a performance entitled Black Christmas Tree described as acupuncture treatment for arts in the city.
