Interviews / Videos: RISK for MOCAtv

While in town for Basel Week Miami, AM had the pleasure to spend some time with RISK who was painting new murals in the Overtown area, many of which were collaborative pieces. We also had the chance to set up an interview with the respected LA-based writer and talk a little about his work, his views on graffiti as an art form, his influences, his deconstructive color wash technique, as well as about the new video by Todd Mazer released today on MOCAtv. Check out […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: PULSE – Highlights

Another strong fair we visited while we were enjoying Basel Week Miami was PULSE. Featuring many galleries and artists that we were familiar with, it was a nice stroll catching up with them as well as learning about some new artists. Here is an overview of what we saw, including these sculptures from Mark Mulroney (seen above), before we take you on some closer in-depth looks at some of the booths. Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Preview: Ray Caesar @ KochxBos Gallery

The last collection of works from Ray Caesar (interviewed) we saw up close and personal was at a special showing in Beverly Hills last December at Stephen Webster. Dutch fans will get the same opportunity this weekend (December 15th) as the Toronto-based artist will be presenting his digital masterpieces at the KochxBos Gallery in Amsterdam. The recently relocated gallery will be home to new pieces like The Manager, Tea with Me and He, We Three Kings, Gift of Love, Gift of Time, and Gift of Joy featuring interactions […]

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: Meggs x Phibs

While roaming the streets during Basel Week Miami, AM came across our old friends from POW WOW, Meggs and Phibs working on a massive collaborative mural. Situated in the Wynwood Walls district, the piece featured Meggs’ phoenix and flames combined with Phibs characteristic patterns. Stop by to see it for yourself if you are in Miami. Preview: “Crucifixion” @ Corey Helford Gallery

This Saturday at the Corey Helford Gallery, a group exhibition has been organized where artists were asked to give their version of the crucifixion of Christ. Twenty three participants will be exploring an event and symbol that has intrigued master painters and sculptors for centuries, but don’t expect any traditional interpretations. Stop by if you are in town to take a look at what Glenn Barr, Ray Caesar, Victor Castillo, Ron English (above), Natalia Fabia, Korin Faught, Sarah Folkman, Nancy Fouts, Eric Joyner, Benjamin Bryce Kelley, Maria Kreyn, […]

Streets: El Mac x Shamsia Hassan (Vietnam)

Last weekend, the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial was held in Australia and with it, a new mural from El Mac was unveiled. Originally painted in Vietnam, the piece entitled Birds of No Nation was a collaboration with Shamsia Hassan, probably the only serious female graffiti writer in Afghanistan and also an associate professor in the Fine Arts Department at Kabul University. The central figure is based on her portrait with the surrounding designs and poetry by Hassani. It reads: پرنده های بی وطن ،همه اسیرن […]

Preview: Dave Kinsey – “Everything at Once” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

This Thursday, December 13th, the Joshua Liner Gallery in Chelsea will be hosting new paintings from Dave Kinsey collectively entitled Everything at Once. His largest body of work to be produced since his 2010 solo there features abstract renderings of his usual characters and subjects, which this time is based on the “dissemination of information received via the internet and TV and how that shapes our thoughts and views on domestic and world views.” Rounding out the show are a series works on paper influenced by old master […]

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: JR x André

Continuing our survey of the streets in Miami, another interesting wall was collaboratively worked on by JR (featured) and André. The two French street artists combined their two styles – the signature photographic eye from JR and the stick figures of André – into a welcome addition to the Design District. JR was in town also for his book release with Jose Parla at The Standard and Mr. A was in town for his Love Graffiti project. Discuss Basel Week Miami here. Discuss JR here.

Basel Week Miami ’12: The Miami Project – Highlights

AM found time to visit another fair in Midtown Miami, the inaugural Miami Project earlier this week. Unlike most new fairs, we were impressed by their solid lineup of respected galleries and great facilities. This is perhaps this is due to the experience of the fair’s organizers, artMRKT Productions, who have already held fairs Houston, San Francisco, and the Hamptons. Check out the selection of works below and the a piece from Mel Bochner above… Discuss Basel Week Miami here.
