PULSE Los Angeles ’11: First Look

With Art Platform in town, the PULSE art fair also decided to hold their Los Angeles event the same weekend. Featuring a mix established and emerging galleries, attendees are giving a nice variety of young and veteran artists.  Also associated with the fair is Pulse Projects, which included installations from participants such as Mike Stilkey, Jen Stark, and Kevin Cyr along with murals from Greg Lamarche and Dave Kinsey (covered). More photos after the jump from Carlos Gonzalez…

Art Platform ’11: First Look

Late Friday afternoon, AM stopped by the vernissage for Art Platform’s debut in Los Angeles. The new event, which looks to become the preeminent art fair in the LA area, is the sister fair to New York’s annual Armory Show. Although it did not attract as many blue-chip galleries as the Big Apple’s version, it was nevertheless an impressive start and we look forward to following the growth and expansion of the event in years to come. Standouts for us include a mermaid drawing from […]

Nuart Festival ’11: David Choe & DVS1

As we continue our coverage of this year’s Nuart Festival, our attention shifts to a street reunion of sorts between DVS-1 and David Choe (featured).  The last time they met up at the festival in Norway was 2009, where they put up a tremendous amount of collaborative work in a short period of time. This time around, they were no less productive, getting up indoors and out including this entire room they covered from floor to ceiling. More photos from AM photographer Henrik Haven after […]

Contests: VNA 16 / Invader Cover Giveaway

Our friends over at Very Nearly Almost have graciously decided to run a giveaway on the newest issue of their magazine here on AM. Not only does issue #16 feature a good slate of artists like Kid Zoom, Will Barras, TrustoCorp, but this is the special edition with a 3 color screenprint from Invader on the cover signed by the French street artist and in a numbered edition of 150 (this one is an AP). The pack also contains a sticker sheet and screenprinted envelope. […]

Openings: Interesni Kazki – “Objects of the Universe” @ Avantgarden

Last week in Milan, the collaborative street muralists from Ukraine, Interesni Kazki, brought their special blend of imagery to AvantGarden. Combining their surreal visions with a sense of whimsy and wonder, the duo impressed the crowd with their plentiful paintings, which translated quite well into the gallery setting especially when executed in large-scale. Also, they gave their fans a taste of what they are famous for (see Russia, Ibiza, Portugal, and Slovakia) with several wall pieces inside and out including a playful “window” at the […]

Nuart Festival ’11: Vhils

Yesterday, we brought you Escif’s contributions to this year’s Nuart Festival. Today, we focus on another great street artist, the Lisbon-based Vhils (filmed) who introduced his unique techniques to his fans in Norway. Not only did he work his magic inside with this double skull chiseling, he also worked on a piece outside on a similar theme. AM photographer Henrik Haven was on hand to document the action.  More after the jump…

Nuart Festival ’11: Escif

Held in Stavenger, Norway once a year, the Nuart Festival has kicked things off this past week as many of the featured artists have arrived. Our first look at the action is with Spanish artist Escif who is part of the lineup for 2011 that also includes Dan Witz, David Choe, Vhils, Herbert Baglione, Lucy McLauchlan, Dolk, Herakut, Tellas, Hyuro, Phlegm, and DVS 1.  You may remember that Escif was just in town for the ______ capitalism? event (covered), but this time spent more time outdoors and in working […]

Streets: Aakash Nihalani (India)

New York-based Aakash Nihalani, who has pushed his tape constructs in the streets to the next level with his recent gallery work, still continues to roam the alleyways, decrepit buildings, and decaying walls to get his message across. These new vibrant works he sent us, featuring his signature geometric tape installations, were placed in India, where he was in town for his exhibition Aalign at Seven Art Limited in Delhi. More photos after the jump…

Preview: Frank Gonzales @ Beals & Abbate

Tonight in New Mexico, Frank Gonzales will be opening his solo show at Beals & Abbate Fine Art. The New York-based painter, who recently made the cover of American Art Collector, will be introducing a new body of work featuring his love for nature infused with a little fragmentation and abstraction. Take a look at more preview images as well as a video after the jump…

Previews: PULSE Los Angeles ’11 – David B. Smith

After previewing three booths (here, here, and here) that we are looking forward to later today at the PULSE art fair, we have one final suggestion for those attending. Head over to check out the offerings from David B. Smith as he will be bringing works from Kris Lewis, Gregory Euclide, and Paul Jacobsen. The expressive new works from Lewis, unique three-dimensional paintings from Euclide, and hyper-realistic renderings from Jacobsen should round out your fair-going experience nicely. More preview images after the jump…
