Preview: Melissa Forman – “Keepers of Creation” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Tonight at Corey Helford Gallery, Melissa Forman will be opening her show “Keepers of Creation” consisting of 16 new paintings. Forman’ mystical female portraiture sets out to portray the characters as protectors of natural world and are wonderfully detailed. Of note, the gallery has generously committed to giving away four 5×7 mini-giclees from Forman to the first 300 guests who arrive at the opening (7-10pm) Some more preview images after the jump…

Openings: Sanrio 50th Anniversary Group Show

Last night at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Sanrio opened the doors to a tremendous 50th Anniversary celebration featuring carnival games, costumed characters, special food booths, limited edition event products from the company, and of course – a themed art group show (curated by JAPAN LA). This Saturday night, November 13th, Carmichael Gallery will be holding a “Block Party” in Culver City with a group exhibition from Boxi, Krystian Truth Czaplicki, Gregor Gaida, Simon Haas, Sixeart, and Dan Witz. Some of you may be more familiar with Witz’ eye-catching street work, but his apparently his fine art skills will be in full effect with a continuation of his series of paintings on the study of light. Tomorrow night in Seattle, two artists we have our eyes on, Femke Hiemstra and Ryan Heshka will be opening a show together at the Roq La Rue Gallery. Femke hails from the Netherlands and will be bringing a new body of work entitled “The Bone Shaped Bone” featuring her imaginative paintings, often on found objects like the book seen above. Have you been wondering what Shawn Barber’s (featured) has been up to since his solo at Joshua Liner in May (covered)? It looks like he’s still hard at work doing what he loves – paint. It looks like Erica Il Cane has started to transform the Fifty24SF space into a personal playground for his whimsical characters with paintings as well as murals inside and outside of the gallery. Last weekend, Subliminal Projects played host to “Pattern Recognition”, a group exhibition from a great set of artists including Seonna Hong, Nikki McClure, Dalek (interviewed), Richard Colman (interviewed), and Souther Salazar. Particularly eye catching for us were the colorful works of Seonna and Souther although the works of Dalek and Colman seemed to fit the premise of the show a little more closely. He ended with a cool extension of the wall piece onto the ground and with the placement of some of his “Camo Deer” figures.
