Recap: Erin M. Riley – “Simple” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Just last weekend in San Francisco, Hashimoto Contemporary closed a solo show from Erin M. Riley (interviewed) entitled Simple. The new weavings continue the Brooklyn-based artist’s provocative work pushing the boundaries of the medium with non-traditional imagery. Nude selfies, car wrecks, evidence of domestic violence – no subject matter is too taboo for Riley as she takes her tapestries to the next level rendering imagery that most observers wouldn’t even think are possible with medium of choice. Revisiting their installation (covered) from 2012 in the Favela of Vila Brasilandia, at the north of Sao Paulo, Boa Mistura returned to update the project. Entitled Luz Nas Vielas, the undertaking saw the collective paint a series of words and colors through their signature use of anamorphosis in the alleyways of the favela. A couple weekends ago, the HOCA Foundation in Hong Kong hosted an opening reception for a new showing from Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) entitled Oh Magic Night. Taking full advantage of the 11,000 exhibition space, the Brooklyn-based artist presented 45 paintings and 10 sculptural works that have been a year in the making. The rich, vibrant, and complex compositions draw from experiences in America as well as from his Japanese ancestry both in subject matter and techniques, some quite impressive in scale. Upcoming: Casey Gray – “Double Knotted” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

On April 1st, Hashimoto Contemporary will present a new body or work from Casey Gray in their San Francisco space. Entitled Double Knotted, this will the first solo at the gallery by the locally-based artist featuring his special form of still life utilizing spray paint and hand-cut masking techniques. Streets: Hula – “Maka’u” (Hawaii)

Continuing his series of works in hard to reach locations, Hula recently painted a mural on the edge of a waterfall entitled Maka’u. Dealing with issues of fear, as suggested by the title, on multiple levels, the piece saw the Oahu-raised artist otherwise known as Sean Yoro suspend himself on the edge of a waterway on surfboard as he took risks to paint an image of a person hanging on by a rope. This weekend, Galerie Perrotin in Paris hosted the opening of a new show from Aya Takano entitled The Jelly Civilization Chronicle.
