LA Art Show ’16: Recap

Last week, the LA Art Show was in town for another go around bringing in more than 120 galleries representing 22 countries. The 2016 edition was the 21st iteration of the fair, but third year for a special section of the event entitled Littletopia (see 2014, 2015). Our coverage will mainly focus on this area, led off by the Jeff Gillette designed entrance inspired by his participation in Banksy’s Dismaland. Photo credit: Birdman Photos.

The next artist we want to share with you in our Art Focus series is Benjamin Garcia and his series of textured portraits. The Venezuelan artist’s multi-layered technique is utilized perfectly to render the disjointed transition between the conscious and the unconscious and seems also to reveal some of the inner psyches of his subjects. Upcoming: Marcel Dzama x New York City Ballet

Following collaborations with Dustin Yellin, JR, and Faile, the New York City Ballet will be working with Marcel Dzama on their fourth annual Art Series. The Brooklyn-based artist will be unveiling a Promenade chessboard installation featuring video, drawings, and sculpture as well as designing the sets and costumes for The Most Incredible Thing, which is based on a Hans Christian Anderson story. After successfully introducing his work with a captivating install at SCOPE Miami last year (covered), Mirus Gallery in San Francisco is getting ready to debut Felipe Pantone’s first U.S. solo exhibition. Opening on Saturday, January 30th, and continuing through February 20th, W3-Dimensional will showcase a new collection of works featuring his ultradynanism style. Previews: Kehinde Wiley – “A New Republic” @ Seattle Art Museum

Starting on February 11th, the Seattle Art Museum will be hosting a solo exhibition from contemporary portrait painter Kehinde Wiley. A New Republic will feature a selection of the American artist’s work that could be said to be a remix of Old Master paintings where the classic European subjects are typically replaced by young urban men of color, playing with ideas of power and breaking down stereotypes. Showing: Marcel Dzama & Raymond Pettibon – “Forgetting the Hand” @ David Zwirner Gallery

Currently at the 533 West 19th Street location of David Zwirner in New York, collaborative works collectively entitled Forgetting the Hand by Marcel Dzama and Raymond Pettibon are on display. This is the first time the two locally-based artists have worked together and their modified exquisite corpse technique of swapping a series of drawings to work on where part of what the other person did is concealed leads to some interesting results. On January 26th, James Jean (interviewed) will be celebrating Chinese New Year a little early with the release of the Year of the Monkey print. The signed and numbered time-limited edition will be available available for one hour only, starting at 8:00 AM PST. Upcoming: Erik Jones @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

After a showing at the end of last year in Italy (covered), Erik Jones has already started to work on a new series of paintings. The new batch of originals are destined for an exhibition closer to home for the Brooklyn-based artist at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in April, his first with the Chelsea showspace. As you can see, he will be presenting more of his vibrant portraiture, infused with abstract forms that could be said to represent geometric high-end fashion. Discuss Erik Jones here.
