Releases: Jose Parla – “Tokyo : Chance Operation” Bal Collecton

Besides an upcoming show in New York (covered), fans of Jose Parla will also be interested to know that he recently collaborated with bal on a collection. Tokyo: Chance Operation features a series of sweaters, hoodies, t-shirts, and bags accented by the New York-based artist’s unique imagery. Parla’s richly textured references to urban walls as well as graffiti inspired calligraphic elements are integrated throughout the line, fitting nicely with the brand’s aesthetic. Oli Epp’s debut solo in the U.S. is currently showing at the Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Contactless, the new body of work from the British artist feature his amoeba-like characters and explore ideas of human relationships, technology and consumer culture. Releases: Keiichi Tanaami – “GOLDFISH GIRL” Stool

Case Studyo recently unveiled a collaboration they worked on with Japanese artist Keiichi Tanaami entitled GOLDFISH GIRL. The resulting stool looks like it comes straight out of one of the renowned artist’s psychedelic paintings and features much of what makes Tanaami’s work so distinctive – a garish palette, surreal touches like the exposed frontal lobe, and a bold graphic style. After introducing Julio Anaya Cabanding’s work at a group exhibition (covered) earlier this year in Montreal, curator Sasha Bogojev will be presenting the debut solo show (opening on April 27th) from the Spanish artist in Italy. JR Transforms Louvre Pyramid Creating Optical Illusion

Returning to the Louvre almost three years after his debut groundbreaking installation (covered), JR (interviewed) has created another large scale optical illusion centered on the museum’s iconic glass pyramid designed by I.M. Pei and completed in 1989. Devised in honor of the structure’s 30th anniversary, the piece titled The Secret of the Great Pyramid required the help of 400 volunteers pasting 2000 strips of paper in the main courtyard. Over the last month, Massimo De Carlo Gallery has been hosting Tomoo Gokita‘s first London exhibition. In Gokita’s post-conceptual paintings, meaning is not so much ambiguous as it is deliberately absent. The focus is entirely on the aesthetic form and the only thing that matters is the acrylic gouache which clings to the surface of the canvas. Last week, the Lotte Museum in Seoul unveiled an expansive retrospective entitled Eternal Journey featuring the art of James Jean (interviewed). The exhibition features over 500 works from the American artist including pieces from his time as a comic book artist, sketchbooks, videos, digital art, and sculptures like a new eight foot tall stained glass obelisk. Last weekend in Detroit, Revok opened his latest solo show at Library Street Collective featuring selections from three distinctive bodies of work – his Instrument Exercises, Tape Loop Paintings, and Spirographs – along with some self portraits. Entitled depersonalization-derealization, the exhibition makes use of his graffiti roots but repurposed, oftentimes with custom tools for creating large scale abstract canvases.
