Basel Week Switzerland ’13: SCOPE

One of the satellite fairs during Basel Week Switzerland is the always quality SCOPE Art Fair. Although, this venue lacks the blue-chip luster of the main event (covered), we always find many familiar faces and intriguing works at this fair. Roq la Rue recently employed the help of many amazing artists to fill the walls for their Otherworld group show. The title of the show was also the theme, with the artists interpreting “otherworld” however they saw fit. With a roster this good, one month just wouldn’t be enough, so the show will be on display until July 27th. Preview: Paul Wackers – “Almost Somewhere” @ Narwhal Projects

After a recent showing in Los Angeles (covered), Paul Wackers will be taking his contemporary still life paintings up north for an exhibition at Narwhal Projects, opening on June 13th. Almost Somewhere will be the Brooklyn-based artist’s first showcase at the Toronto gallery and will continue his representations of domestic collections of objects and plants in his unique way. Wacker’s imagery include of geometric & abstract elements and is richly textured & layered, a result of his technique that often times include multiple components that are created separately before assemblage. Releases: AJ Fosik – “Shining Deathless” Print

Sculptor AJ Fosik (see our studio visit here) is known for his wood-bashing skills, but in a slight departure from his more recent medium of choice, he is due to release a limited print this week. Shining Deathless bridges the gap between his sculpture and the print medium by the use of relief on this embossed, hand finished print (see the hand-carved brass used in the process below). American artist Maya Hayuk recently visited Cologne, Germany where she took part in its CityLeaks Urban Art Festival. It is the second time that the event has been organized there this year. NYC nonprofit art space Art in General currently has an excellent exhibition by Letha Wilson, entitled Landmarks and Monuments. The show consists mostly of Wilson’s photo-based sculptures—many of which were created and installed specifically for the site. In the center of the gallery, a floor-to-ceiling photograph of a moonrise curves around one of the space’s support columns. Joshua Liner Gallery recently welcomed the return of Oliver Vernon to New York City, with a new solo show entitled Renegade Trajectories. This fresh exhibition highlights Vernon’s cerebral and energetic visuals and pushes them to another level. Vernon utilized a variety of mediums and techniques to create this new collection of landscape abstraction, including acrylic on canvas or linen, as well as ink works on paper. After coming in as the runner-up for TIME magazine’s Person of the Year in 2011, things of come full circle for Ai Weiwei. The latest issue of the magazine features an illustration from the Chinese artist – activist with the title “The World According To China” overlaid on an oversized map of China compared to the globe created from old money symbols and flowers of prosperity.
