Art HK ’12 Art Fair – BMW Art Car x Andy Warhol

This year, Art Hong Kong had a special booth that was not hosted by a gallery, but an automotive company. BMW, long a sponsor of the arts with their Art Car program in where legends like Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Jeff Koons and Alexander Calder were recruited to design the exterior of their flagship sports car. Coming up in October, the David B. Smith Gallery will be hosting a new solo exhibition from Kris Lewis (interviewed). If his previous shows (see 2011 & 2009) at the Denver showspace are any indication, the California-based artist will be bringing a selection of enchanting oil paintings with him. Sculptor and photographer Jason deCaires Taylor recently made his premiere at Jonathan Levine Gallery with a solo exhibition entitled Human Nature. The British born artist who grew up with the coral reefs of Malaysia is known for taking his talents of altering environments to the ocean. Utilizing specialized PH neutral materials, Jason creates cement based sculptures and lays them in nature’s aquatic settings to create artificial reefs. One of the busiest indoor malls (with more than 200,000 visitors a day) in Hong Kong’s Time Square recently played host to the work of Mike Stilkey (interviewed). The second half of the Joshua Liner curated Go West exhibition featured work from versatile artist David Ellis, which took up half of Los Angeles’ Mark Moore Gallery (see Kris Kuksi’s part in the show here). It looks like Kelsey Brookes has been working on a new body of work for Quint Contemporary Art in La Jolla, set to open in November. The upcoming series of paintings, drawing from the San Diego-based artist’s science background, will be inspired by structural diagrams of different neurotransmitters as well as the drugs that mimic them, both designer (i.e. xanex, prozac) and recreational (i.e. mescaline, LSD).
