Showing: “Dualities, Omissions, Loops, and Ruptures” @ Luis De Jesus Gallery

A few weekends back in Los Angeles, Luis De Jesus opened a group exhibition entitled Dualities, Omissions, Loops, and Ruptures, featuring local artists Chris Engman, Cody Trepte, Samantha Roth, and John Houck. The cleverly curated grouping brought together four artists as disparate in technique as they are unified in purpose, collectively weaving between photography, film, drawing, print, and sculpture in order to explore ideas of “constructed realities” and “emotional dualities” in their own individual ways. Openings: “Keith Haring: 1978-1982” @ Brooklyn Museum

Last week, the Brooklyn Museum unveiled a special exhibition entitled Keith Haring: 1978-1982. The amazing retrospective chronicles the specific period of time when Keith Haring left his home of Pennsylvania to attend New York’s School of Visual Arts during which he met friends and peers such as Jean Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. Haring’s integration and experimentation of both studio and street works are explored through 155 works on paper, seven videos and 150 archival objects – among them sketchbooks, journals, posters and subway drawings. Streets: JR x Liu Bolin (Part I)

In preparation for his upcoming show at Eli Klein Fine Art, Beijing-based artist Liu Bolin was in town to once again hit up New York. Earlier this month, the Spoke Art Gallery opened its doors to a solo exhibition from Portland-based artist Ron Ulicny. His collection of New Works feature familiar objects that have been modified in novel ways to give new meaning to the pieces. The show included sixteen new sculptural creations, each challenging the viewer to find new purpose in the transformed items while showing off Ulicny’s humor and wit. More photos after the jump…

First up for this week’s Rewind feature is this video showing Evan Roth’s novel use of spray cans from his Propulsion Painting series (via today and tomorrow). These creations were featured in his recently opened Welcome to Detroit showing at Eastern Michigan University. You can see more footage of the work here if you are interested. This weekend’s Art Focus is on Spanish artist Tania Blanco and her series of Sleep-Drunk Vademecum paintings. The intriguing set of rounded acrylic on wood pieces are her treatise on science and the human condition featuring medical instruments, high precision technology, scientific devices, anatomical models, and clandestine laboratories as her subjects. Last week, Antony Micallef’s (interviewed) show featuring his ongoing Head series opened at The Outsiders in London. The gifted painter put ten examples of his abstract gestural works on display and collectively named the exhibition A Little Piece of Me, an apt term seeing as these works are somewhat self-portraits and an integral part of his work process even when creating his larger works. Armory Week ’12: ADAA Art Show – First Look

The Armory Art Show (here & here) may be the flagship event of Armory Week in New York, but the most prestigious title this year goes to another. The ADAA Art Show held at the Park Avenue Armory (covered) was a smaller, but more selective fair. Like a small jewelery box, this event drew some of the top galleries from around the nation. Last Saturday evening, Guerrero Gallery in San Francisco hosted the opening of Cleon Peterson’s latest solo exhibition entitled The Brinksman. The paintings in the show bring you into a world put on the brink through corruption and violence by figures that are motivated by their own selfish needs.
