With his aesthetic continuing to gain traction in the world of fashion, this newest project from Ryan McGinley was commissioned by Vogue UK. Shooting model Sienna Miller for the magazine’s April issue, the New York-based photographer utilized some of his signature looks such as the play of motion & focus, nude portraiture with birds, and explosive techniques. Openings: Henry Lewis & Lango Oliveira – “Neon Knights” @ 111 Minna

Last Friday, 111 Minna hosted the opening reception for two tattoo artists, Henry Lewis and Lango Oliveria from the renowned San Francisco-based studio Skull & Sword. The show featured an array of drawings and paintings in various sizes and mediums, as well as a few collaborative works. Henry Lewis’s artwork tends to breath new life into more antiquated/classic imagery, while Lango’s take the view into another dimension embedded in mythology where beasts roam the world. Armory Week ’12: Volta Show – First Look

Continuing our Armory Week coverage we move on to Volta. This fair is the little brother to the main Armory Art Show (here & here). For Volta, selected galleries don’t exhibit various artists from their roster, instead they focus on one artist to showcase at their booth. This rule kept our head spinning to a minimum, but nonetheless the visual talent had our eyes dancing around the whole time. Check it out after the jump.

Last Friday, one of China’s most famous contemporary artists finished creating his last commissioned gunpowder drawing for his upcoming exhibition, Sky Ladder, at the Los Angeles MOCA. Cai Guo-Qiang’s third explosive effort (see our coverage of first and second sessions) resulted in Childhood Spaceship, a monumental piece (13′ x 108′) that featured imagery and memories that have sparked the artist’s curiously as a youth. Another show we visited in Culver City on Saturday night was Jim Houser’s showing at LeBasse Projects. Featuring meticulously constructed installations of his paintings and sculptural items, As Quiet As Itʼs Kept put on display the Philly artist’s signature patchwork of favorite items, creatures, words, symbols that for this exhibition was inspired by the impact of fatherhood and explores and the new responsibilities faced. A couple weeks ago, the Richard Heller Gallery in Santa Monica hosted the opening for Corey Arnold’s Wolf Tide. The vibrant new work by the Portland-based photographer are a series of shots taken during his experience working as a commercial fisherman in Alaska. His travels have taken him to the Bering Sea, Europe, South Africa, the Atlantic, and the Arctic. and his subjects include humans, eagles, gulls, deer, vast seascapes and surreal landscapes.
