Studio Visits: David Shillinglaw

Studio visits are probably the most enjoyable things that we get to do here at AM. A little time to talk with the artist about their work, and also a chance to soak up the environment in which the work is created. David Shillinglaw’s environment is a pretty special one. His North London home and studio is situated at the top of an old brick-built warehouse / factory building and the huge loft offers more work and play space than any of the studios than […]

Art Focus: Korehiko Hino

This week’s Art Focus features the haunting works of Korehiko Hino. The Japanese painter is known for his portraits of characters in trance-like states with large unblinking eyes often superimposed on vibrant backgrounds. When viewing his paintings, one can’t help looking into the mesmerizing and disturbing gaze of his subject, engaging in a staring contest that can’t be won. For those in Asia, you might be able to catch his work this weekend at AHAF SEOUL 2011 in Korea or next week at Art Taipei […]

Preview: Damon Soule – “Then What Happened” @ FFDG

It’s been almost a year since we caught up with Damon Soule at his New York showing, but it looks like he has been putting his time to good use. Then What Happened will open tomorrow night, August 20th at the Fecal Face Dot Gallery in San Francisco and will feature his vibrant and organic imagery, some looking pretty large-scale. More preview images after the jump…

Videos / Teaser: Mark Whalen – “Anomaly” @ Merry Karnowksy

Coming up next month, Mark Whalen (aka Kill Pixie) will be unleashing a new body of work for Merry Karnowksy Gallery where he showed last October. Although we’ll be looking forward to seeing the progression of his signature characters in their geometric environs, what blew us away were the animations he has been working on. Talk about next level shit. Also, a preview image after the jump…

Openings: Tauba Auerbach – “A Book Is Not An X” @ John McWhinnie & GHB

On Friday, Tauba Auerbach unveiled a truly unique body of work at John McWhinnie @ GHB in East Hampton, NY. The show entitled A Book Is Not An X (previewed) is a play on a statement she made last year in an Artforum review of Carsten Nicolai’s book Grid Index: “a book is an X-axis. The format is almost always linear; the content, bound in a prescribed order, marches single file.” For this exhibition Tauba created six “books” and each plays on this notion and […]

Openings: Dalek – “Prism Break” @ Hurley Space

A couple Fridays ago, Orange County was treated to a captivating installation by James Marshal aka Dalek (interviewed) at the Hurley Space Gallery. Immersed in all directions by the New York-based artist’s geometric creations, viewers were also introduced to a matching line of Phantom 4D Board Shorts as well as some surfboards and bikes. More photos after the jump…

Openings: Andrew Schoultz & Paul Klee – “Images in Dialogue” @ SFMOMA

Just this Saturday, the SFMOMA hosted an intriguing posthumous dialogue between Swiss-born Modernist Paul Klee and the very much living Andrew Schoultz (previewed). Images in Dialogue featured new works from the SF-based Schoultz displayed side by side with Klee’s work with the former pieces created in response to the latter’s paintings. When Schoultz was first approached by SFMOMA curator, John Zarobell regarding the project, he was familiar with Klee’s work, but did not consider him direct influence. As he did more research, he was surprised […]

Art Focus: Amy Bennett

We’ll be re-purposing our Art Focus feature a little by using it to introduce you to artists that are new to us or those not reported on frequently here on AM. First up is Brooklyn artist Amy Bennett who uses the interesting technique of building miniature sets and then using them as reference for her remarkable paintings. Not only are they rendered beautifully giving you an almost painted equivalent to tilt-shift photographs, she also manages to infuse her compositions with subtle storytelling that leaves one […]
