Signings: Jose Parla and Marcel Dzama

As if there weren’t enough things already to do in NYC this Armory weekend, two of our favorite artists, Jose Parla and Marcel Dzama, have book signing events scheduled for this Saturday. Dzama will be at David Zwirner between 4-6pm to sign copies of his past publications, as well as his latest book Behind Every Curtain, released as part of his current show of the same name at the gallery (c0vered). Parla will be signing his new book, Walls, Diaries, and Paintings, released in conjunction […]

Armory Week ’11: First Look at The Armory Show

New York is a lot of work… especially when the Armory is in town – the busiest week of art in North America after Basel Miami of course. We caught the VIP preview to bring you a detailed first look at the flagship Armory fair. You’ll definitely see many blue chip names, but to our delight we also found many new comers. Check it all after the jump.

Preview: Marilyn Minter – “Paintings from the 80s” @ Team Gallery

About 30 years before her inclusion in the 2006 Whitney Biennial and the appearance of her work on billboards in Chelsea, Marilyn Minter was already exploring issues of sexuality, glamor, fashion, the body, and commodification.   See the genesis of what has progressed to become her signature bold, hyper-realistic close-ups of glamorous and sexy lips, tongues, and other body parts at her show opening March 31 at Team Gallery.  Paintings from the 80s includes pieces created earlier in the artist’s career (in the 1980s surprisingly) […]

Teaser / Setup: Armory Week ’11 – Jim Houser (Jonathan LeVine booth @ VOLTA)

Showing with Jonathan LeVine at the VOLTA satellite fair (also see Mark Jenkins & Richard Colman) at this year’s Armory Week will be Jim Houser. Judging from all the setup action we see, attendees can look forward to very nice installation which is typical for the Philadelphia-based artist (ie last year’s Subliminal Projects show).  AM loves his quilt-like blocks of imagery and look forward to seeing new symbology added to his lexicon.

Teaser: Kris Lewis @ David B. Smith Gallery

We last talked to Kris Lewis (interviewed) at last year’s Grammy group show which he co-curated and also in 2009 before his show at David B. Smith Gallery. Time flies as he’s scheduled again for a solo exhibition in May at the Colorado showspace with a new body of work; the piece above being the first piece we have seen.  If that is any indication, we are in for a great show.  We’ll have more to follow as the show draws nearer. Discuss Kris Lewis […]

Teaser: Armory Week ’11 – Richard Colman – “Can’t Get There From Here” (V1 booth @ VOLTA)

With Armory Week in New York set to start tomorrow, we wanted to let you know about a couple more artists to look out for.  Take a look at this floor piece for an install Richard Colman (interviewed) has planned for the V1 booth at VOLTA. If you remember, it looks like the same one he used for his immersive show at Guerrero Gallery back in October. Keep it locked on AM of course as we will be bringing you on-site coverage of all the […]

Streets: MOMO in London

Following a brief stint alongside Brad Downey and Vhils in Lisbon, Portugal as part of the ongoing and impressive Crono project (featured here and here), MOMO arranged a short stay in the UK before heading back earlier this week to his latest base in security-challenged New Orleans. For want of a more appropriate euphemism, it was an interesting few days at the AM London residence. The artist’s arrival overlapped with a visit by Christian Coinbergh’s “Gang of Three” from Stockholm – the latter in town […]
