Update: Mark Dean Veca C.O.L.A. Fellowship Exhibition

It looks like Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) is tackling another pop icon for his upcoming C.O.L.A. Fellowship exhibition at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. After revealing his version of the Kool-Aid Man in January, the LA-based artist turns his attention to Charlie the Tuna on his 50th anniversary as the mascot for Starkist Tuna. Mark will certainly be busy working up to the opening of his show in May, as we have also learned he is working on a permanent art project for the […]

Among the lots are pieces by many of our favorite artists, including Chiho Aoshima, Marcel Dzama, Phil Frost, and Barry McGee. One notable lot is Portrait 5, Stephen(s), 2009–2010, a collaborative work by Shepard Fairey, Andres Serrano and Frank Stella, which debuted on the December 8, 2010 episode of The Colbert Report as part of an interview with Steve Martin and is now being sold […]

Openings: Slinkachu – ‘Concrete Ocean’ @ Andipa Gallery

Last Wednesday 2 March saw the opening of the Slinkachu solo exhibition, Concrete Ocean (initially mentioned by us in January), at London’s Andipa Gallery. There was a refreshingly mixed crowd in attendance, with a number of the regular faces at East End shows having dusted off their passports and made the trek over to Knightsbridge. To the gallery’s credit, the complimentary bar never ran out of alcohol, which helped maintain a cheerful atmosphere throughout the evening. As for the art itself, guest reception was enthusiastic. […]

Openings: José Parlá – “Walls, Diaries, and Paintings” @ Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery

Armory Week is a time when many art heavyweights of the art world converge on New York so galleries in the area save some of their best artists/exhibitions just for this occasion. On Thursday night, Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery launched an epic exhibition for one of AM’s favorites, José Parlá. Entitled “Walls, Diaries and Paintings”, the show (previewed) filled the entire gallery space with José’s calligraphic style. Utilizing the techniques and reference photos which he has accumulated over the years on his travels, Parlá created a […]

Set-up/Installation: James Jean – “Rebus” @ Martha Otero

As many of us have been anticipating, James Jean’s first solo show in Los Angeles will be opening in about a week.  We provided a preview of the art work in the show, now here is a sneak peak at how they will be presented.  Jean hand painted an entire wall in the gallery, providing a immersive background for the exhibition, in his signature flowing lines.  Be at Martha Otero on the evening of March 12, as Rebus opens to the public. Openings: Ian Francis – “Fireland” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last night, Ian Francis (featured) unveiled his latest body of work Fireland at Joshua Liner Gallery. Exhibiting in his first New York solo, Mr. Francis again knocked it out of park, clearly dazzling the Armory week crowd that attended. Ian’s paintings demonstrated why many around the world draw inspiration from his creations. It was also exciting to see a number of varied mediums he choose to exhibit – ranging from canvas to charcoal to inks on paper. We also noted the further refinement of Ian’s already popular […]
