Showing: Jose Parla – “Mirrors” @ Brand New Gallery (Milan)

Last weekend, a new collection of works from Jose Parla was unveiled at Brand New Gallery in Milan entitled Mirrors. The fresh pieces featured less prominent roles for the his signature script and instead had a more collage feel to them through the incorporation of parts of posters ripped off the walls of Milan, Rome, Napoli, Matera, Bari, Lecce and Bologna. These richly textured offerings from the Brooklyn-based artist reflect on his travels in Italy as well as pays homage to several artists including Mimmo Rotella, Isidore Isou, Tristan Tzara, and Burhan Dogancay. Showing through this weekend at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art is a retrospective of Yoshitomo Nara’s career spanning 30 years. Entitled For Better Or Worse, the exhibition includes wide range of work including installations, paintings, sculptures, and drawings. As stated by the museum – “‘For better or for worse’ is a wedding vow: a lifetime commitment from one person to another. Showing: Jeff Soto – “Potatostamp” @ Riverside Art Museum

Currently at the Riverside Art Museum, Jeff Soto (interviewed) has a show on view featuring his screen-printed gig posters and fine art prints from the last 15 years. Entitled Potatostamp, the retrospective look at this aspect of the locally-based artist’s career includes over 70 posters, as well as 40 original ink drawings. Releases: Javier Calleja – “Missing The Blue Sky” Figure

After successful Asian debut with AishoNanzuka Gallery in Hong Kong earlier this year (covered), Javier Calleja recently teamed up with the Asian art institution APPortfolio to transform one of his paintings into 3D sculpture. The result is meticulously crafted figure titled Missing The Blue Sky, that will be released in a limited edition of 200 pieces worldwide. Following up on last year’s showing (covered) at the New York location of Lehmann Maupin, Mr. returns to Asia with an exhibition at the gallery’s Hong Kong space. Installation: Faith XLVII & Lyall Sprong – “Astronomy Nova”

During the recent Artscape Festival in Sweden, Faith XLVII teamed up with Lyall Sprong to create an immersive site specific installation set deep in the Värmland forest. Depicting the moon glowing and rotating within the tall trees, this piece is another example of how the South African-born artist is stepping further away from the classic street/urban art niche. Recently, Aron Wiesenfeld released a new print entitled Bonny Doon through Static Medium. The image features a characteristically atmospheric scene from the artist featuring a girl running through the woods.
