Openings: Max Kauffman – ‘Your Vulnerability Makes You Beautiful’ @ Loakal Gallery

Earlier this month Max Kauffman opened his solo exhibition Your Vulnerability Makes You Beautiful at Loakal Gallery in Oakland. Folk-tinged, and stylistically defined by his watercolour colour palette of brown and blue hues, Kauffman’s work within the exhibition presents subject matter of broken down houses and landscape elements reclaimed by nature. There’s a level of calm and delicacy within the chaotic compositions, full of details that emerge and reveal themselves the further you look into Kauffman’s paintings. The Bay Area artist also painted a mural inside the […]

Studio Visit / Previews: Sail – “Dead Language” @ Roq La Rue

This author had the pleasure of interviewing Sail in 2012 for his personal blog, but a lot has changed for the Seattle based artist since then. Shortly after his personal website launched in late 2012, he caught the eye of Kirsten Anderson, owner and curator of Roq la Rue. He soon found his name on the artist list for the I’ll Love You Until the End of the World group show. His work was well received, and after ThreeA Publishing released his book in their GOYA series, […]

Upcoming: Tim Biskup – “Charge” @ Martha Otero Gallery

On September 28th, the Martha Otero Gallery in Los Angeles will be hosting a new solo show from Tim Biskup (featured) entitled Charge. The new body of work will revolve around Biskup’s thoughts on the title of the show, which holds complex personal references for him. Not only does the more common meaning to feel psychologically or emotively “charged” describe his feelings behind the exhibition, but “charge” also is used in particle physics and can be applied to color theory. For those in the area, the opening starts at […]

Opening: Nicola Verlato & Caleb Brown – “Pagan Pop” & “A Modern World” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

A couple weekends ago, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery hosted new work from Nicola Verlato (featured) & Caleb Brown entitled Pagan Pop & A Modern World collectively. Featuring two surreal paintings styles that pair nicely together, the exhibition allowed fans to look into the imaginative minds of these two artists. On one side of the gallery, Verlato (seen above) created suspended human forms placed in beautifully rendered fantastical situations seen through the lens of how Western society has continually attempted to suppress its pagan roots. Not to be outdone, Brown painted his versions of […]
