Releases: Ryan McCann – “Death To Koons” 1xRun Print

Continuing their line of desirable prints, 1xRun has announced their next release – Ryan McCann’s Death To Koons image. The provocative portrayal of the contemporary art giant being dunked into one of his famous basketball tanks comes from McCann’s “Death To…” series (you may remember a previous painting poking fun at Banksy). The 20 x 16″ limited edition comes in a max run of 100, will be available for the next six days, costs $75, and can be purchased here for those interested.

Some of his organic imagery has made it in as illustrations for an article entitled Rethinking Sleep on the cover of The Sunday Review section. For those fans of Sylvia Ji (interviewed) out there who particularly liked her “Day of the Dead” imagery, you are in luck. She will be opening a new solo on November 3rd (the Saturday right after the actual Mexican Holiday) at the new CHG Circa Gallery. Presumably, La Catrina will feature paintings from the Los Angeles-based artist centered around the masks, skulls, iconagraphy and other imagery associated with “Dia de los Muertos”. On September 29th, Dutch artist Piet Janssen (better known as Parra) will be opening a new show at the HVW8 Gallery in Los Angeles entitled Kind Regrets. On display will be new works featuring his distinctive saturated colors and characters – namely men with beaked heads and voluptuous women. For our Art Focus this week, a new artist you may want to check out is Vasilis Avramidis. The Greek artist’s oil paintings depict scenes and objects that overgrown where inhabitants are attempting to control and maintain the lush vegetation. Avramidis draws inspiration from gardens that are both real and imaginary, his references vary from the far away reality of Gilgamesh’s Garden of the Gods to the gothic Highgate Cemetery. A couple nights ago in Culver City, the NY-based Martin Wittfooth (interviewed) brought his dystopian visions to the Corey Helford Gallery with a new solo showing entitled Empire. Playing on themes of power, politics, greed, and more through his animal surrogates, Wittfooth surrounds them with bleak post-apocalyptic landscapes to further emphasize his points.
