Art Focus: Jose Luis Carranza

The artist we have chosen to share with you for this week’s Art Focus is Jose Luis Carranza. The Peruvian figurative painter trained at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes del Peru where he received education on classical techniques and then moved on to Europe to further learn from studying works of the old European masters. His portraiture features a striking wide-eyed gaze, bold use of color, thick brushstrokes, and references to both biblical and Incan symbols. Openings: Scott G. Brooks & Fred Harper – “The Luckiest Widow In The World & Other Tales Of Misfortune” & “Head Spin” @ Last Rites

Last weekend, Scott G. Brooks and Fred Harper opened up a joint show at the Last Rites Gallery in New York. Brooks let his imagination run wild with a series of dark and inventive works entitled collectively The Luckiest Widow In The World & Other Tales Of Misfortune. Preview: “Lush Life 3” @ Roq La Rue

Tomorrow night, December 9th, the third rendition of Lush Life will be showing at the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle. As usual, the lineup is a stellar collection of purveyors of pop surrealism and includes the likes of Femke Hiemstra, Chris Berens, Josh Keyes, John Brophy, Travis Louie, Marco Mazzoni, Jessica Joslin, Joseph Park, Mia Araujo, and more. Openings: Ray Caesar – “it started with eve…” @ Stephen Webster

Over the weekend, Stephen Webster (located in Beverly Hills) opened up their 2nd floor gallery space with an exhibition curated by the Corey Helford Gallery. Featuring the work of Ray Caesar (interviewed), the evening centered around the murder mystery theme during the special event. Basel Week Miami ’11: Scope

One of the satellite fairs we attended during Art Basel Week Miami was Scope. Housing a variety of genres, we saw a healthy mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with. From OsGemeos to Roa, Ron English to Ray Caesar, Aakash Nihalani to Jenny Morgan, there seemed to be something for everyone at this fair. Check out more photos after the jump.

Tonight at Stephen Webster in Beverly Hills in their 2nd floor gallery space, an exhibited curated by Corey Helford Gallery will open featuring the art work of Ray Caesar (interviewed). Basel Week Miami ’11: Mark Ryden x Taschen “Pinxit” Party

Last night, AM attended the release party for Mark Ryden x Taschen Books. The Basel Week event was held at the Soho House Miami and gave us a first look at their newly released book Pinxit which contains a comprehensive survey of Mr. Ryden’s illustrious 20 year career (previewed here). Yesterday, AM stopped by PULSE, one of the satellite fairs of Art Basel Week Miami, and we were greeted by a pretty solid selection of art work from various artists and their galleries (after the fixed a lighting issue).
