Armory Focus: Mizuma Art @ Armory NYC

Japan’s Mizuma gallery made quite a splash at this year’s Armory, selling out most of the art they imported from the land of the rising sun. As usual, their booth was filled with some of Japan’s notables: Akino Kondoh, Sashie Masakatsu, Makoto Aida, Aoyama Satoru, andÂ Tanada Koji to name a few. After their highly successful group show last year, Hi-Fructose is back again with another exhibition, this time titled “Overdose,” opening April 4th at Copro Gallery.Â With a increasingly more respected reputation as one of the best publications in the scene, they been able to assemble a pretty amazing lineup.Â Sure to be one of the showstoppers is this huge 50 x 50 inch Chris Berens piece seen above.Â See some other preview pics as well as the full lineup after the jump.

Shepard Fairey’s Obama – Change on South Park

Yesterday afternoon, one of our favorite contemporary pop artists, Ron English, along with west coast artists Bigfoot and Jason Maloney, injected a little extra life into downtown Jersey City. They blessed Hudson County Art Supplyâ€™s exterior wall in Jersey City, NJ with a huge, colorful, and collaborative mural. Â It was a gorgeous day for painting. Ana Bagayan presented new work at Billy Shire this past Saturday, March 14th. AM met up with Ana during the first hour of the opening reception. She took us through and showed us her new pieces, which include 9 paintings, 10 drawings and a numbered edition print. Luke Chueh’s show “From Light Cometh Darkness” opens this Friday, March 20th at Corey Helford Gallery. Although this body of work encompasses his usual beloved but sad and/or tortured characters, Chueh does appear to be exploring some different techniques and themes.
