Previews: Esao Andrews – “Petrichor” @ Mesa Contemporary Art Museum

Coming up next month (May 10th), Mesa Contemporary Art Museum will be opening Petrichor, a mid career retrospective dedicated to the dark and surreal vision of Esao Andrews. Featuring 20 iconic paintings contributed by collectors around the world, the showing from the Mesa, Arizona native will also include never seen before pieces, 70 skatedecks he has designed in the past, as well as a site specific mural. Releases: Hikari Shimoda – “Lonely Hero and Obake” Figures

In a few hours, Hikari Shimoda will be releasing her latest collaboration with APPortfolio – the Lonely Hero and Obake figures. Both versions Polaroid (full-color, run of 300, $488) and Birch (wood, run of 118, $1360) have been made available already at the Shanghai Toy Show with an online release slated for Apportfolio’s website on April 15th, 10:00pm GMT. Over the last month, Massimo De Carlo Gallery has been hosting Tomoo Gokita‘s first London exhibition. In Gokita’s post-conceptual paintings, meaning is not so much ambiguous as it is deliberately absent. The focus is entirely on the aesthetic form and the only thing that matters is the acrylic gouache which clings to the surface of the canvas. Showing: James Jean – “Eternal Journey” @ Lotte Museum

Last week, the Lotte Museum in Seoul unveiled an expansive retrospective entitled Eternal Journey featuring the art of James Jean (interviewed). The exhibition features over 500 works from the American artist including pieces from his time as a comic book artist, sketchbooks, videos, digital art, and sculptures like a new eight foot tall stained glass obelisk. Previews: Steven Harrington – “Magic Hour” (Los Angeles popup)

On April 13th, Steven Harrington will be unveiling his latest body of work to his fans in Los Angeles with a show entitled Magic Hour. Featuring new paintings & drawings, the frenetic compositions feature some familiar motifs and characters from the California-based artist’s oeuvre, all rendered with a vibrant color palette. Upcoming: James Jean – “Eternal Journey” @ LOTTE Museum of Art (Seoul)

Last weekend, James Jean (interviewed) previewed a new stained glass work he has created in collaboration with Judson Studios. The large sculptural work is a followup to the pieces that were created for his exhibition in Tokyo last year (covered), and will be on display when the American artist’s solo Eternal Journey opens at the LOTTE Museum of Art in Seoul on April 4th.
