For the entire month of January, Cleon Peterson has an exhibition open in Hong Kong at The Space in Sheung Wan (210 Hollywood Road) with the support of Over The Influence. From what we have seen from sneak peeks on her Instagram, fans will be in for a treat as there are some large scale works planned all rendered with a eye-catching palette. On February 20th, robots and donuts will be making their appearance in scores at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles. They are of course the favorite subjects of Eric Joyner’s (interviewed) whimsical paintings and will be again for his new body of work entitled Sweet Dominion. Art Focus: DU Kun

This week’s Art Focus is on artist DU Kun and his surreal portraits of Chinese rock stars rendered as temples built into the sides of mountains and cliffs. The faces of each subject is assembled with a mystic combination of elements such as air, earth, and water leading to a god-like temple structures overlooking their own fiefdoms and worshippers (not unlike how recording artists have rabid fan communities). Last week in Los Angeles, Shag (interviewed) brought a little retro chic to the new Corey Helford Gallery location with his latest solo entitled Jungle Drums. Along with his signature paintings featuring a nostalgic look back when mod characters hung out sipping martinis, the downtown LA showspace also featured tiki sculptures, a mid-century decor, as well as a large wall covered with his imagery. The last solo we had the opportunity of attending from Amy Sol (interviewed) in Los Angeles was back in 2013 (covered), so it was nice to hear she will be presenting some new works at Thinkspace Gallery soon. Entitled Garden Gamine, the set of fresh paintings will continue the Nevada-based artist’s series of delicate portraitures featuring her feminine subjects and their animal friends. An example of this can be seen above, but plan to be there for the opening on April 2nd to seen the rest. Discuss Amy Sol here.
