Earlier this month, Roq la Rue hosted it’s first opening of 2016 with Jonathan Viner’s Strange Math. This marks a new less-is-more approach for the Seattle gallery, focusing on one artist a month, with a couple group exhibitions during the year. The show from the Brooklyn-based artist provided a great start to the new year with the large paintings filling the main floor of the gallery. Upcoming: 2nd Annual “Ema Show” @ Hatos Bar (Tokyo)

Starting on February 13th, a show organized by Hellion Gallery will be showing in Tokyo at the Hatos Bar. It’s appropriate that the 2nd annual Ema Show will start in Japan as the concept was to have artists paint the small wooden plaques on which Shinto worshipers write their prayers or wishes. Over the weekend, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked off the festivities with a show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement, something they have done for the last two years before this (see 2015 & 2014). As in the past, artists were asked to contribute works that conform to a certain format, leading to a visually congruent and display of artworks. Releases: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Sunny Flower” Series

Several days ago, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) released more iterations of his “Sunny Flower” series. The potted blooms are customized with the Los Angeles-based artist’s signature facial features and take inspiration from his job during college was delivering bouquets in Santa Barbara.
