James Jean x TBWA\Paris – AIDES Campaign

After working with Apple to promote their new Pencil stylus, James Jean (interviewed) decided to harness the new technology for his latest project. The second Saturday of August of every year is International Swingers Day (common knowledge of course) – so to mark the occasion, Jean was commissioned by TBWA\Paris to create a special image for AIDES, the leading HIV/AIDS organization in France. He decided due to limited space and time constraints to execute the piece while on the road in the Japan on his iPad. Discuss James Jean here.

Openings: Karla Ortiz – “Chimerical” @ Spoke Art

Last week, Spoke Art in San Francisco proudly presented a debut solo show from Karla Ortiz (seen below) entitled Chimerical. The display of new illustrations and paintings from the locally-based artist featured a selection haunting works drawing from her experience as a concept artist in the gaming and film industries. Inspired by the Brothers Grimm and other mythological stories, Ortiz’s storytelling talents are evident as viewers are drawn into the narrative as they stand gazing at her pieces. Recently in Mannheim, Germany, Bezt from the Etam Cru painted a eye-catching new mural for the Stadt.Wand.Kunst open urban art gallery project. The somber multi-story high piece is simply entitled Europe and features a glimpse at a funeral procession. We can think of several ways this new wall can be interpreted, but whatever your own thoughts about it, we can all agree the Polish street artist got his message across in a striking and beautiful way. Sam Friedman will be opening a new exhibition soon at Chandran Gallery in San Francisco. For his debut West Coast solo show, the New York-based artist has prepared 16 new intuitive abstract works, many of which are large scale. Sitting Pretty will be on view September 2 – October 14 with an opening reception on September 2 from 7 – 9pm with the artist in attendance. Mural Social Club is another international festival of art in the public space, taking place around Kiev this last couple of months. Continuing to refine his technique and evolve his art, the Australian born artist takes his work to the next level with shaped canvases featuring entangled characters and objects. Several weeks ago, Blu was invited to Porto Torres, Sardinia, by the C.S.O.A. Pangea Posthudorra collective. During his visit, the Italian artist painted another impressive piece in the Villaggio Satellite residential part of town. The finished mural depicts a large head whose face is formed with a human puzzle, sending a message of unity. Done using a signature illustrative style with a lot of small detail that creates the story, the piece is painted on a colorful gradient background which accents the main image. Fresh from her recent museum exhibition opening at the CAC Malaga (covered), Miss Van is back to Toulouse, the city where she started to paint, with a new mural for the Rose Beton Festival (covered). La symphonie des songes features her signature sensual female character in a dreamlike landscape playing with colourful folklore masks from various continents, transporting us from China to Latin America. After an Istanbul premiere in January of 2016, Banksy’s unofficial and unauthorized retrospective is currently on view at Amsterdam’s Beurs van Berlage. The Art of Banksy includes over 85 pieces selected by the elusive artist’s former agent, Steve Lazarides, making it the biggest show of Banksy work ever put together.
