Basel Week Miami ’14: Tom Fruin @ AQUA (Paul Loya Gallery)

While walking through the Aqua Art Fair (covered) during Basel Week Miami, we were delighted to come across the work of Tom Fruin at the Paul Loya Gallery booth. Although we were familiar with his amazing stain glass installation pieces (see 2014, 2012), we were not aware of the versatility of the Brooklyn-based artist. On display were metal works fashioned into cop cars and grids as well as a quilt made from found drug bags. Take a look at more photos below… See all our coverage of Basel […]

Je Suis Charlie

With the world’s attention on Paris after the tragic events that unfolded today, artists around the world have shown their solidarity with the French people by doing what they do best – making art. Inspired by the phrase “Je Suis Charlie” or “I Am Charlie,” creatives like Hanksy above have shown their support for freedom of expression with “cartoons” of their own. Take a look at a small sampling below…                               […]

Showing: Soey Milk – “SINAVRO” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Currently on view at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City is a solo show from Soey Milk entitled SINAVRO, which is a pure Korean word translated loosely to mean “to progress slowly, almost imperceptibly.” Those who have followed evolution of the young Los Angeles-based artist’s work certainly have seen a move toward richer backgrounds and more intricate detailing in her feminine portraiture. Head over before January 10th if you want to check out her new paintings and drawings as well as a few purely abstract pieces that seem […]

Heath West is a Houston-based practicing architect and artist that has recently been included in Tumblr’s 2014 Year in Review Artists to Watch list. With a background in art history and master’s in Science of Advanced Architectural Design at Columbia University, his ‘wall-works’ or ‘non-paintings’ often use architectural concepts and theories in art production, focusing on the structure and transformation of space. Recap: Kevin Peterson – “Remnants” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Yesterday, we stopped by on the last day of the soldout Kevin Peterson show at Thinkspace Gallery to check out his new paintings. Collectively entitled Remnants, the fresh collection of works feature the Houston-based artist’s children and animal portraiture in urban settings. Utilizing these unlikely subjects with such stark backgrounds often featuring graffiti, abandoned structures, and overgrowth provides a contrast that is recognizable in all of his work. Some of the pieces had three-dimensional elements included (like metal grills) that fit in seamlessly into the […]
