Previews: Jolene Lai – “Play” @ Thinkspace Gallery

On Saturday night, April 26th, Jolene Lai will be presenting five new works in Thinkspace Gallery’s project room (an encore to her showing there in 2013). Entitled Play, the new collection of paintings demonstrate the Los Angeles-based artist’s unique world, filled with whimsical and adventurous scenes seemingly taken directly from a fairytale or surreal dream. Previews: Josh Keyes – “Entwined” @ Antler Gallery

Tomorrow night, April 24th, the Antler Gallery in Portland will be presenting some new work from Josh Keyes (interviewed), in a joint showing with Neil M. Perry entitled Entwined. For his part, Keyes will be continuing the series of work last seen in his online showing (covered) earlier this year in his new style, bringing his imagery all the way to the edge of the painting surface. Openings: “SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot” @ Oakland Museum of California

Last weekend, the Oakland Museum of California opened a new exhibition, entitled SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the art and culture magazine Giant Robot. Along with a diverse selection of GR branded paraphenalia and publications, artists who have been involved with them over the years contributed original artwork as well as some wall murals. Fans saw a diverse collection of works from artists like Ako Castuera, Sean Chao, Luke Chueh, Hamburger Eyes, Andrew Hem, James Jean, kozyndan, Masakatsu Sashie, Shizu Saldamando, Rob Sato, Amy Sol, Deth P. Streets: Nychos (Oakland)

Austrian street artist and a member of the The Weird Crew from Europe, Nychos, recently spent a few weeks in San Francisco. His temporary residency consisted of working on his solo show at Fifty24SF, painting several murals around the city, and even doing some free tattoo sessions. Showing: Berndnaut Smilde – “Antipode” @ Ronchini Gallery

We first introduced you to Berndnaut Smilde’s work last year, when a video was released documenting the Amsterdam-based artist’s amazing process of creating “clouds” indoors. Fans in London now have the opportunity to see some of the Dutch artist’s work in person as he is currently showing at Ronchini Gallery. Openings: Laser 3.14 – “Troublemakers Make The World Go Round” @ Galerie Bart (Amsterdam)

Dutch street artist Laser 3.14 (featured), opened a solo show, Troublemakers Make The World Go Round, at Galerie Bart in his hometown of Amsterdam on April 12th. Through this exhibition, the mysterious artist introduced the indoor versions of the infamous statements, thoughts and slogans that he’s been painting around the city for the last 15 years. Releases: Luke Chueh – “Bitch” Figure

After introducing his collaboration with Pretty In Plastic at his last show (covered) in Los Angeles, Luke Chueh (featured) has revealed another image of his new art toy – Bitch. Like the Jack sculpture seen in that exhibition, this latest figure is based on a sculpt from Pretty In Plastic, and in this instance will be produced by Munky King. Over the weekend, an exhibition to benefit CAMP2E opened at the Soze Gallery entitled Steer Ahead. Artists like Dave Kinsey (seen above), Victor Castillo, Cyrcle., Devngosha, James Haunt, Brittany Segal, Dan Quintana, Bon Nielsen, Gregory Siff, Aaron De La Cruz, Paige Smith, Kristin Bauer, RETNA, Sarah Sandin, Aaron De la Cruz, Bone Thrower, Cole Sternberg, and Fidia Falaschetti were asked to customize and paint real steer skulls and display it along with original artwork. Showing: Jonathan Yeo – “Portraits” @ The Lowry

For those who missed Jonathan Yeo’s exhibition (covered) at the National Portrait Gallery in London, you may want to head north to The Lowry in Manchester. Portraits sees the British artist’s work travel up for another museum showing, featuring many of his most famous subjects including Kevin Spacey, Damien Hirst, Helena Bonham Carter, George Bush (cast in one of Yeo’s porn-infused collages), and others.
