Releases: Kid Acne – ‘Council Pop’ (screen-printed 10 year anniversary edition)

Kid Acne’s coming back through like an amber gambler with the re-release of his 2003 album Council Pop in a special 10 year anniversary edition (has it really been 10 years?). AM readers will probably be more familiar with the graffiti / street art side of Kid Acne’s creative output, but if you haven’t heard his Yorkshire infused hip hop, then this could be an ideal intro to the world of Eddy Fresh. Streets ahead of his debut Rap Traffic, Council Pop lacks some of the […]

Basel Week Switzerland ’13: SCOPE

One of the satellite fairs during Basel Week Switzerland is the always quality SCOPE Art Fair. Although, this venue lacks the blue-chip luster of the main event (covered), we always find many familiar faces and intriguing works at this fair. Take a look at an overview of what was offered in the photos below… Photo credit: Andrew Hosner for Arrested Motion.

Studio Visits: Hisham Echafaki

AM recently had the chance to visit pop-surrealist painter Hisham Echafaki‘s studio. Using acrylic and oil paint, the London-based artist loves exploring symetry and patterns, as well as depicting animals in a surreal environment, as shown in his kufic and butterflies series. We were fortunate to document some of the painting process of his Anthropomorphic Bowie pieces as he prepared for the upcoming group show The Many Faces of David Bowie at the Opera Gallery London. Openings: KAWS – “GISWIL” @ More Gallery

A couple weeks ago, we gave you a taste of what to expect for the KAWS solo at More Gallery opening during Basel Week Switzerland. Now, we have gathered some more detailed photos of the two massive wood companion sculptures as well as some of the tondos that were exhibited at the same time. We know it’s a trek to get out to the show even if you are in Basel at the moment, so if you can’t make it out before the August 26th close, just take a […]

Upcoming: Peter Chan – “Soliloquy” @ Copro Gallery

Next Saturday night (June 22nd), the Copro Gallery in Los Angeles will be presenting a new show from Peter Chan. For his first solo with the gallery and in the United States, the Toronto-based artist has created a series of works collectively entitled Soliloquy, a fitting title considering the introspective contemplations he had while producing these paintings (see statement below). Also take a look at the time-lapse video. Top 40 blares out the radio unheard, you’re stuck in traffic on the 405 but it doesn’t matter. […]

Streets: DALeast (Vienna)

The prolific artist DALeast has struck again, this time in Vienna. The South Africa-based Chinese artist painted a mural that draws from his roots as the title of this latest piece is “-“, the a character that means “one” in Chinese. Painted over some scattered graffiti, the work featuring his animal characters rendered with his kinetic brushstrokes blends in nicely with the wall. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss DAL here.

David Choe for Fin Bec

David Choe, who will be releasing a print on Monday, also worked in Switzerland on an art and wine project called myFINBEC last year. The award winning winery, Cave Fin Bec, brought together eight graffiti artists to paint on large wooden canvases constructed from 84 wine crates. These were then dismantled into their individual parts and filled with six bottles of wine with the artwork adorning each one. Customers who buy these bottles will also own one section of the original painting. Take a look […]

Art Focus: Robert Burden

Robert Burden’s artwork centers around his love for childhood toys, heroes, and icons & is the subject of our latest Art Focus feature. His nostalgic representations of these action figures from his past are set against backgrounds and patterns taken from fabric, rug, or wallpaper from his home while growing up. This elevation of these mass produced items with a reverence and almost talismanic obsession is an ironic metaphor for the consumer addiction seen today. The series of work seen here was included in his […]
