Openings: Richard Colman @ Guerrero Gallery

We last heard from Richard Colman when he showed in Toronto (covered) last year with Andrew Schoultz. This time around, he is showing alongside another talented artist, Alex Lukas (covered), at the Guerrero Gallery in San Francisco. Lukas filled the project room with a selection of paintings and monochromatic works populated by a surreal mix of his hooded figures, nudes, and bears. Streets: Escif (Spain)

After giving you an overview of Escif’s work recently, we have another mural to share with you from the Spanish street muralist. Entitled The Enlightened Vandalism, the massive wall is located in Villarreal and features a masked figure engaging in various illegal activities and acrobatic maneuvers in a repeating composition that is often characteristic of Escif’s work. Tonight (May 18th) at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery, Souther Salazar will be presenting his fourth solo with the gallery entitled Souvenirs. The show will feature a selection new paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations by the Portland-based artist inspired by the Trading Tortoise, his recent collaboration with his wife, Monica Choy. Streets: Hush (Los Angeles)

Last we heard, Hush (interviewed) was in Melbourne for a solo showing in May of 2012 (covered). Fast forward a year and this time he will be opening an exhibition tomorrow night at the Corey Helford Gallery. While here, he just finished a mural at the Branded Arts Building featuring his East meets West urban aesthetic. Tomorrow night (May 18th) in New York, Andy Kehoe returns for his third solo show with Jonathan LeVine Gallery with new works collectively entitled Luminous Reverie. Continuing a new process (sculpted elements mixed in with poured resin and paint) first revealed to us during a show in Los Angeles last year (covered), the Pittsburgh-based painter has given his human-animal hybrid figures and forested backgrounds new life. Patricia Piccinini, the subject of one of our Art Focus features earlier this year, has taken to the skies with her latest work again showcasing her love for the grotesque and her strong imagination. The Skywhale hot air balloon was commissioned for the Centenary of Canberra, and will be floating by different locations in Australia the rest of the year. Wonderful Land marks David Benjamin Sherry’s second solo exhibition at OHWOW and features photographs from the American Western and Southwestern states, taken with a large format, handmade, analog wooden film camera over the course of several months. The artist prints each image in his own darkroom, creating vivid and detailed images with brilliant colors. Andrew Schoultz recently painted this mural in San Francisco on the side of Pop’s Bar on 24th and York Stree in the Mission District. The Victorian style structure was reinvigorated with the locally-based artist’s kinetic imagery including some of the motifs that appear commonly in his work – horses, bricks, telephone poles, and more. As you can see, the work navigated around the various architectural components as well as incorporated some existing graffiti. Discuss Andrew Schoultz here.
