West coast graffiti legend SABER (interviewed) recently stopped by the Big Apple to showcase a new body of work at Opera Gallery. Taking another step in his abstraction style, the street titan created a series that was quite moving with paintings that blurred the boundaries between sharp & tactical and smooth & strategic. Currently showing at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery through May 4th is Thursday’s Girl from painter Josh Agle, otherwise known as SHAG (interviewed). For his fourth solo exhibition with the Chelsea showspace, the Socal-based painter presents a new body of work inspired by “All Tomorrow’s Parties, the classic Velvet Underground song in which lyrics written by Lou Reed spoke to New York’s downtown art scene found in places such as Warhol’s Factory.” The pieces reflect an aesthetic strongly influenced by mid-century modern design and are rendered in his distinctive style and palette. Streets: José Parlá x JR @ Bryce Wolkowitz

In preparation for their joint show opening on May 7th at the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery, JR and José Parlá worked on a mural together in Chelsea over the weekend. The piece is a followup to the epic series of walls they collaborated on in Cuba last year (covered) and will be the subject of their exhibition – The Wrinkles of the City, Havana, Cuba. Celebrating the 64th anniversary of French magazine Paris Match, in partnership with Opera Gallery in Paris, 19 artists paid tribute by revisiting some of their iconic covers in paintings, sculptures, photos and other mixed media. Participating artists included Speedy Graphito, C215, Blek Le Rat, The London Police, Kan, Dest, Paul Alexis, G.J. On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. Earlier this month, Bischoff Projects in Frankfurt hosted a new showing from Ryan McGinley entitled Running Water, What Are You Running From? In addition to large-scale editions of the New York-based artist’s photos, there were also some smaller prints that were arranged in a cluster against one wall.
